Job description

Senior Consultant – HVDC

The energy transition is vital to our future and at PSC, we are compelled to make a difference. As a specialist consultancy to the energy industry, we bring deep technical expertise and independent thinking to every challenge. For 30 years, our global teams have supported major operators, renewable developers, and manufacturers through some of the sector’s most complex projects.

Why PSC?

We empower people to transform the energy industry — together, we’ll power a more sustainable world. Work at PSC is flexible, challenging, and purpose-driven.

We:

  • Celebrate the individual — our people are our greatest asset.
  • Embrace innovation and a growth mindset.
  • Offer real autonomy, a lot of flexibility, and leadership opportunities.
  • Support your life outside of work, with a balanced, people-first culture.
  • Are a collaborative global team solving critical problems across the asset lifecycle.

About the HVDC Team

You’ll join a tight-knit team of HVDC specialists working across the full lifecycle of converter assets — from specification and design through to commissioning and long-term operational support. We collaborate with system owners, operators, and OEMs on complex, high-impact projects, including Eleclink, the Eastern Green Link projects, and the Celtic Interconnector.

Our clients include industry leaders such as National Grid, SSE, EirGrid, and Hitachi. Whether it's fault diagnosis on live assets or detailed OEM design reviews, our focus is always on delivering practical, hands-on engineering solutions. This isn’t just paper-based consulting — it’s critical, real-world technical support that keeps vital HVDC infrastructure running.

We have offices in Edinburgh, Newcastle and Stafford but you don't need to be near an office to work for us. We value in person interaction and strive to make that happen, but our team also appreciate the flexiblity of being able to work from anywhere in the UK.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you’ll bring deep HVDC technical expertise to:

  • Lead engineering support across all phases of HVDC projects: specification, design review, testing, commissioning, and ongoing operational support.
  • Conduct site inspections, witness testing at OEM facilities, and support live commissioning efforts.
  • Analyse and resolve operational issues on interconnectors and converter stations, offering trusted client advisory throughout.
  • Guide clients through HVDC technology options and system design decisions.
  • Work closely with Project Directors, Procurement, and Legal teams on behalf of clients.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to thought leadership via white papers and industry groups (e.g., IEEE, CIGRE).

Some travel will be required across the UK (typically no more than once a month), along with occasional international site visits for factory testing or commissioning activities.

What We’re Looking For

  • An undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering; Chartered Engineer status (or on track).
  • 8+ years of HVDC project experience, including system design, commissioning, and operational support.
  • Strong knowledge of converter station equipment, insulation coordination, and system-level design.
  • Experience working on major HVDC interconnectors.
  • Confident communicator with the ability to influence and advise at senior levels.
  • Collaborative mindset, with comfort working in a dispersed, international team.
  • A strong professional network and interest in business development.
  • A growth mindset, and a passion for developing both your own skills and those of others.

At PSC, we want work to enhance your life — not dominate it. We offer the flexibility and autonomy to manage your work in a way that fits your life, while still being part of a collaborative, high-performing team. You'll be trusted to deliver meaningful outcomes, supported by a culture that values both professionalism and balance.

If you want to shape the future of HVDC in the UK and beyond — from hands-on operations to strategic consulting — PSC offers you the platform, the projects, and the people to make it happen.
