Global Strategic Communications Council (GSCC), a global network of communications professionals working in the field of climate, energy and nature. GSCC is a program hosted by the Meliore Foundation.
We're looking for a Senior Communications Associate for Food - UK who wants to play a role in shifting the UK to a more sustainable food system. This new role will focus on shaping the national and regional conversation about food, health and the environment.
We are looking for a media campaigner with experience of working with mainstream UK print and broadcast media who knows how to develop and action a strategic communications plan, build press relations and develop partnerships to generate compelling stories which help shift debates. About the team
You’ll be joining our Food and Nature team, and reporting to the Senior Lead for Food and Farming. We lead the GSCC’s work to increase political attention and action on the role that the land-use sector plays in delivering a wide array of public goods including environmental protection. We are a 10-person team of campaigners, media and digital experts who use strategic communications to get food and nature top of the political agenda.
How you'll contribute
- Co-developing the strategic communications plan to promote the shift to sustainable food systems in the UK;
- Working with specialists to define audiences, gather audience insights and run message testing;
- Building relationships with key partners, including NGOs, think tanks, academics and professional bodies;
- Generating compelling media stories including commissioning insights, analysis and research;
- Leading on media relations and outreach - building a network of journalists across mainstream, trade and digital media outlets; editorial engagement; advising partners on media tactics; media monitoring and reactive media work;
- Providing expert comms advice to a network of UK partners working on relevant topics;
- Project management of communications outputs and deliverables such as pitch packages for journalists and digital content creation.
Our ideal candidate has
- Track record of developing and delivering impactful strategic communications campaigns - demonstrated through media hits and reach of traditional and digital media;
- Extensive experience of how to use different media including traditional legacy media, trade press and new digital media to run and win effective campaigns;
- Media relations - experience of working directly with journalists, pitching stories, building journalist relations, media nous for what makes a good story for UK mainstream media and relevant trade outlets;
- Writing skills - demonstrable experience of drafting compelling copy including press releases, press pitches and social media posts;
- Partnerships - experience of developing and working with a broad range of partners such as NGOs, think tanks and academics as well as advising organisations on communications strategies with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships;
- Digital - understanding of how to integrate digital media into traditional media outreach;
- Understanding the political dynamics of food systems, climate change and rural affairs in the UK and the challenges and opportunities this presents for communications.
