Job description

As a Cloud Architect, you’ll operate at various levels, including setting strategic technology direction, defining architectural patterns / standards, contributing to solution architecture & governance of architecture / design for the cloud platform as well as consumer cloud solutions.

You’ll collaborate with engineering, delivery & operational teams. Guided by a deep understanding of their challenges, you will ensure that the Society’s strategy & architecture are well understood.

You'll work in an agile manner with workstreams and feature teams to provide guidance on product development, to align with the landing zone in place or iterate on the capability roadmap to include any new features into platform roadmaps.

You'll assure design artifacts done by the product teams (business and platform), providing feedback enabling efficient and effective cloud adoption using the full suite of cloud services offered.

This role sits within the Cloud Function under Cloud, Digital and Integration Domain, and is responsible for building and maintaining our enterprise dual cloud platform (AWS and Azure). The platform is a realisation of Nationwide’s multi-cloud; hybrid-cloud strategy allowing a spectrum of workloads (incl. Important Business Services) to be deployed onto public cloud underpinned by centrally managed shared services.

What you’ll be doing

From writing solution intent documentation to engineering and demonstrating proof of concepts using new and modern cloud native technologies, you’ll be responsible for effective and efficient adoption of cloud services within the society.

You will work closely with your peers in business areas to help adopt cloud services, and in the process define standards and patterns from those experiences.

You will also work with Platform Engineering team on defining reference architecture as well as target state for key cloud technologies. You will leverage on your learnings from industry best practices and cutting edge cloud native technology innovations to define the target state.

About you
  • You are a seasoned cloud architect with a strong track record of designing and implementing sophisticated, secure, and compliant solutions across both AWS and Azure within the demanding UK financial services sector.
  • You possess deep, hands-on expertise across core AWS (Eg. EC2, S3, VPC, RDS) and Azure services (Eg. VMs, Blob Storage, VNet, Azure SQL, AAD, Functions, ARM).
  • You have proven experience migrating complex workloads and are adept at hybrid and multi-cloud strategies. Experience in architecting for scalability, resilience, security, and cost-efficiency, adhering to the Well-Architected Frameworks of both platforms.
  • Advanced cloud networking and security are your strengths. You master native security tools (e.g., AWS Security Hub/GuardDuty, Azure Defender/Sentinel) as well as Third party solutions such as Palo Alto (Prisma/Firewall), and Hashicorp Vault, robust IAM, data protection, and designing for UK financial regulatory compliance (FCA, PRA, GDPR).
  • You champion Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred), automation (Python/PowerShell), and DevOps/CI-CD practices as part of your solutioning approach.
  • Experience with containers (Docker, Kubernetes - AKS/EKS) and cloud-native database/analytics solutions is essential.
  • You are a strategic thinker who translates business needs into robust cloud architectures.
