Job description

Senior Cloud Engineer (Senior Platform Engineer)

Flutter Technology seeks a Senior Cloud Engineer to take a leading role in designing, implementing, automating, and operating their evolving AWS-based Internal Developer Platform (IDP), which is foundational to their global betting brands. This senior role involves shaping technological strategy, collaborating on service migration and modernisation, setting technical standards, and delivering innovative capabilities to enhance delivery speed, reliability, and developer experience. The ideal candidate will possess enterprise experience in large-scale cloud transformations, deep technical expertise in cloud-native technologies (including Kubernetes) and automation, a strategic and collaborative mentality, and a passion for improving developer workflows, ready to provide technical leadership, mentor others, and drive strategic contributions.

About Division/Function

Flutter consists of two commercial divisions (Fanduel and International) and our central Flutter Functions; COO, Finance & Legal. Here in Flutter Functions we work with colleagues across all our divisions and regions to deliver something we call the Flutter Edge. It's what differentiates us, our 'secret sauce' which plays a key part in our ongoing success and powers our brands and divisions, through Product, Tech, Expertise and Scale. In Flutter COO we work with experts across Flutter to build, deploy and communicate the Flutter Edge. Together we cover Product & Payments, Technology, Sportsbook Product & Trading, People, Property, Corporate Communications and Strategic Partnerships & Transformation.

What you'll do

  • Build and operate a secure, performant, and cost-effective AWS Cloud Platform.
  • Own and evolve our Kubernetes platform, ensuring its scalability, security, and operational excellence.
  • Spearhead the automation strategy using advanced Infrastructure as Code (IaC) methodologies (Crossplane, Terraform, CDK) and configuration management tooling, driving towards a self-service developer experience.
  • Own and implement standard processes for source code management (Git/GitHub) and artifact repositories (e.g., container registries, Helm repositories), ensuring security and consistency.
  • Drive technical design reviews, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and setting high standards for code quality.
  • Enable and support engineering teams with the adoption of cloud services.
  • Mentor and coach junior engineers within the team, fostering their technical growth, reviewing their work, and ensuring their success.
  • Actively contribute to the platform's technical roadmap and strategy, collaborating with architects, product managers, and leadership to define future direction.
  • Lead the troubleshooting of complex incidents, problems, and risks impacting the platforms services, driving sustainable incident response and blameless post-mortems.
  • Author, oversee, and ensure the quality of technical documentation, LLDs, runbooks, and architectural diagrams.
  • Lead the evaluation and integration of new tools and technologies (e.g., within the Kubernetes, GitOps, CI/CD, and observability ecosystems).
  • Ensure the platform meets stringent security and compliance requirements, embedding security throughout the design and operational lifecycle.
  • Liaise with Third Party vendors and partners.
  • On-call is likely to be introduced in the future.
How you'll do it
  • Significant, demonstrable experience building, operating, and scaling cloud platforms within highly available AWS environments.
  • Expertise in Kubernetes (EKS preferred) architecture, operations, and ecosystem tooling.
  • Advanced proficiency with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools at scale.
  • Proven experience implementing and managing GitOps workflows and tooling
  • Strong, practical experience designing and managing complex CI/CD pipelines (e.g., AWS CodePipeline, Argo Workflows, GitHub Actions, Jenkins).
  • Strong programming and scripting skills (e.g., Python, Go, Bash) applied to automation, platform development, and tooling.
  • Mastery of Git and collaborative development workflows (GitHub).
  • Extensive experience working with Linux operating systems in cloud environments.
  • In-depth understanding of cloud security principles and proven experience delivering systems in security-compliant environments.
  • Proven ability to design, document (LLDs), and implement complex technical solutions independently.
  • Experience leading technical initiatives or feature development within a platform or cloud team.
  • Experience managing deployment assets like container images, Helm charts, and operators.
  • Demonstrable experience with incident, change, problem, and risk management processes in a production environment.
  • Proven leadership and mentoring capabilities.
  • Exceptional ability to work effectively, build strong relationships, and influence stakeholders in crossfunctional, global teams. Outstanding communication skills.
  • Impartial, data-driven approach to decision-making. Excellent complex troubleshooting and analytical skills.
  • Ability to grasp the big picture, navigate ambiguity, adapt approaches, and translate strategic goals into technical solutions.
  • Actively listens, provides constructive feedback, clearly articulates complex ideas, and influences effectively. Passion for sharing knowledge.
  • Experience architecting and implementing large-scale service migrations (rehosting, refactoring, rearchitecting) to AWS.
  • Experience specifically building platform APIs or developer-facing tools.
  • Experience presenting technical concepts to diverse audiences.
