Job summary

A large hospital trust in the UK is seeking a Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow in Obstetrics and Gynaecology to develop educational programs and provide clinical services. This one-year, extendable position requires significant teaching experience in a medical setting, combined with post-registration experience in Obstetrics & Gynaecology. The successful candidate will work collaboratively within a multi-professional team and develop essential training materials. Full GMC registration and relevant medical qualifications are mandatory for this role.

Senior Clinical Teaching Fellow in Obstetrics and Gynaecology ST3

East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust became a University Hospital in 2009 and is made up of three hospital sites based in Ashford, Canterbury and Margate that take undergraduates from St George's Medical School, King's College School Medical School and St George's International School of Medicine. Kent's new medical school, the Kent and Medway Medical School, will open its doors in 2020 and we will be taking students from there in 2023. There is a dedicated Education Centre on each hospital site that plays a significant role in medical student and training doctors' education and training.

There is a vacancy for a Clinical Teaching Fellow. The posts are primarily work-based within the QEQMH, Margate and WHH, Ashford, but the post holder will be required to travel to other sites of the Trust as required.

Main duties of the job

This is a one-year post (extendable for an exceptional candidate) with division of the post holders time between medical education, including simulation-based teaching, and providing registrar level clinical service.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Develop a wide-ranging understanding of educational theory and teaching methodology supported by the clinical lead for Education and the HEE KSS simulation lead.
  • Work as a collaborative member of the multi-professional education team including practice development midwives, obstetricians, obstetric anaesthetists and fetal monitoring midwives to deliver our maternity training programme.
  • Develop and maintain educational materials, teaching aids, and tools.
  • Develop and deliver simulation scenarios under the supervision of the clinical lead for education in collaboration with the trust simulation team.
  • Ensure that education and training activities continually integrate themes and learning identified by the risk governance team.
  • Pursue and evidence a wide-ranging portfolio of teaching including small group teaching, simulation, development of e-based teaching, and other teaching resources.

Qualifications and Training
  • Full GMC Registration with license to practice.
  • MBBS or equivalent.
  • MRCOG Part 1.
  • Higher Medical Degree or qualification.
  • MRCOG Part 2 Completion of basic ultrasound module or equivalent.
  • NTN in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
Skills and Experience
  • 4 years post registration Obstetrics & Gynaecology -completion of ST4 competencies by appointment.
  • Held a previous teaching post or designated teaching role.
Clinical Governance
  • Work place-based assessments and OSATS showing competency for knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems.
  • Capacity for excellent clinical & diagnostic skills & judgment.
  • Demonstrates ability to prioritise clinical need & to look at the social context of medical problems.
  • Evidence of working at a more senior level in supporting junior registrars.
  • Undertaken training or CPD related to teaching.
  • Higher qualification in medical education.
Personal/Professional Attributes
  • Employed in the UK in the last 2 years.
  • Computer/IT literacy.
  • Evidence of relevant academic research & achievements.
  • Publication or presentation to a national or international audience.
Other Requirements
  • All applicants to have demonstrated skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues.
