East & South East London Pathology Partnership

Band 8a HCPC-registered Senior Clinical Scientist in Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology

Applications are invited from exceptional, self-motivated HCPC-registered Clinical Scientists (cancer genomics, molecular or cytogenetics) to join the Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology Department.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have operational management of a designated area of the service. The post holder will be involved in the analysis and reporting of complex genomic results including molecular tests, cytogenetics and whole genome sequencing (WGS). The post holder will be involved in the research and development of genomic testing for cancer patients. The post holder will contribute to training and mentoring of the scientific workforce both within the organisation and across the North Thames Genomic Laboratory Hub (GLH).

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.

The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Significant experience (in excess of 5 years) of working in cancer genomics within a diagnostic NHS laboratory.
  • Experience and competence in writing complex clinical diagnostic reports.
  • Experience of laboratory management and supervisory work.
  • Experience of analysing and reporting whole genome sequencing.
  • Experience of teaching undergraduate/postgraduate students and clinical staff.
Skills
  • Able to undertake advanced Molecular Pathology techniques including analysis and reporting.
  • Experience of using bioinformatics tools to analyse and interpret complex genetic data.
  • Good negotiating and influencing skills.
Knowledge
  • Strong understanding of cytogenetics and molecular genetics.
  • Specialist knowledge of haematological disorders and solid cancers including theoretical understanding of other diagnostic specialities involved in patient diagnosis and management.
  • In-depth knowledge of quality management systems and ISO15189 standards.
  • Excellent operational and process management expertise.
Qualifications
  • BSc in an appropriate Biological Science (1st or 2nd class).
  • FRCPath part 1 or PhD in Haem/Onc/Genetics.
  • HCPC Registration as a Clinical Scientist.
