Job description

Wehave a 1-year maternity leave cover post for a part time (0.6wte) Senior Clinical orCounselling Psychologist to work into the Cancer Psychology Service(including the Teenage and Young Adult team (TYA)) and the haematologypsychology teams (sickle cell, thalassemia, haemophilia and Infected BloodPsychology Service) at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. The post is alsoopen to Clinical or Counselling Psychologists with less experience who wouldbe given additional support to do the role. Both the cancer and haematologypsychology teams are a well-respected and appreciated contribution to themulti-disciplinary cancer and haematology services. The post offers theopportunity for 1:1 work with people undergoing treatment, as well as MDTconsultation and supervision of staff.

Theremay be additional hours available in another service within the department.

Main duties of the job

Thispost would suit a Clinical or Counselling Psychologist with experienceworking in physical health settings/ medical team, ideally with experience ofworking with chronic health conditions. It would also suit a Clinical orCounselling Psychologist with experience of working as part of amulti-disciplinary team providing trauma informed care. The role will be toprovide expert and specialist psychological assessment andtreatment/intervention and contribute to service development. Thepsychologist will be integrated with the highly experienced andmulti-disciplinary teams with both services. The post-holder may also providesupervision to other members of the team (dependent on experience).

About us

Thepost sits within the LTHT Cancer Psychology Service and Haematology team butwill also have strong links with the wider Clinical & Health PsychologyDepartment. The Department has flourished and has over 50 cliniciansorganised into three sectors (Medicine, Neuropsychology and Surgery &Rehabilitation). We have several special interest groups for psychologistswanting to develop therapeutic skills in areas such as Acceptance andCommitment Therapy, Compassion Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapyand Cognitive Analytic Therapy, as well as a focus on regularsupervision.

Thereare very close links with the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Training Programmeat the School of Medicine, Leeds University. There is the opportunity tooffer a training placement to trainee clinical psychologists.

Job responsibilities

2. JOB PURPOSE/SUMMARY

Toprovide a qualified Clinical Psychology service to adult patients, across allsites and sectors of care by:

a) Providing highly specialistpsychological assessment and therapy,

b) Offering advice and consultation onpatients psychological and neuropsychological care to non-psychologistcolleagues and to other non-professional carers,

c) Using research skills for audit,policy and service development and leading on research projects within thearea served by the team/service

d) Working autonomously in the executionof these duties and within professional guidelines and the overall frameworkof the Psychology Teams, Department and Trust policies and procedures.

PRINCIPALDUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Clinical:

1. To provide specialist psychologicalassessments of patients based upon the appropriate use, interpretation andintegration of complex data from a variety of sources including psychologicaland neuropsychological tests, self-report measures, rating scales, direct andindirect structured observations and semi-structured interviews withpatients, family members and others involved in the patients care.

2. To formulate, develop and implementplans for the formal psychological treatment and/or management of a patientspsychological problems, based upon an appropriate conceptual framework of thepatients problems, and employing methods based upon evidence of efficacy,across the full range of care settings.

3. To be responsible for implementing arange of psychological interventions for individuals, carers, families andgroups, within and across teams employed individually and in synthesis,adjusting and refining psychological formulations drawing upon differentexplanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses.

4. To evaluate and make decisions abouttreatment options taking into account both theoretical and therapeutic modelsand highly complex factors concerning historical and developmental processesthat have shaped the individual, family or group.

5. To exercise autonomous professionalresponsibility for the assessment, treatment and discharge of patients whoseproblems are managed by psychologically based standard care plans.

6. To provide specialist psychologicaladvice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributingdirectly to patients formulation, diagnosis and treatment plan.

7. To contribute directly and indirectlyto a psychologically based framework of understanding and care to the benefitof people under the medical services, across settings and agencies servingthe patient group.

8. To undertake risk assessment and riskmanagement for individual patients and to provide advice to other professionson psychological aspects of risk assessment and risk management, withparticular reference to deliberate self-harm.

9. To act as care co-ordinator, whereappropriate, taking responsibility for initiating planning and review of careplans under enhanced CPA (or its equivalent in the acute physical health caresetting) including patients, their carers referring agents and othersinvolved in the network of care.

10. To communicate in a skilled andsensitive manner, information concerning the assessment, formulation andtreatment plans of patients under their care and to monitor progress duringthe course of both uni- and multi-disciplinary care.

Teaching,training, and supervision

1. To receive regular clinicalprofessional supervision from a more senior clinical psychologist and, whereappropriate, other senior professional colleagues

2. To gain additional highly specialistexperience and skills relevant to clinical psychology and the service (asagreed with the Lead Psychologist and Head of Department) up to two sessionsper week.

3. To develop skills in the area ofprofessional post-graduate teaching, training and supervision and to providesupervision to other MDT staffs psychological work as appropriate.

4. To provide professional and clinicalsupervision of doctoral trainee and graduate/ assistant psychologists.

5. To contribute to the pre- andpost-qualification teaching of clinical, health and/or counsellingpsychology, as appropriate.

6. To provide advice, consultation andtraining to staff working with the patient group across a range of agenciesand settings, where appropriate.

Management,recruitment, policy and service development

1. To contribute to the development,evaluation and monitoring of the team, specialty and department operationalpolicies and services, through the deployment of professional skills inresearch, service evaluation and audit.

2. To advise both the service and theLead Psychologist on those aspects of the service where psychological and/ororganisational matters need addressing.

3. To manage the workloads of assistantgraduate psychologists and doctoral trainee clinical psychologists, withinthe framework of the team/specialty and Department policies and procedures.

4. To be involved, as appropriate, inthe short listing and interviewing of assistant / graduate psychologists.

Researchand service evaluation

1. To utilise theory, evidence-basedliterature and research to support evidence based practice in individual workand work with other team members.

2. To undertake, as a major component ofthe post, appropriate research and provide research advice to other staffundertaking research, and to disseminate appropriate material viapresentation and publication.

3. To lead on research projects withinthe area served by the team/service.

4. To undertake project management,including complex audit and service evaluation, with colleagues within theservice to help develop service provision.

5. To provide appropriate researchsupervision of doctoral trainees and graduate assistant psychologists.

Thejobholder will liaise with Consultants and other medical, nursing or alliedhealth professional staff across the organisation. They will also liaise withthe Lead Clinical Psychologist, other Clinical Psychologists working in thedepartment, members of the psychology team and members of other disciplinesand agencies responsible for a patients care.

Experience
  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of patients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in patient settings.
  • Experience of working with a wide variety of patient groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity .
  • Experience of working in medical multi-disciplinary teams and offering systemic interpretations to have impact on the team functioning in patient care.
  • Experience of teaching, training and supervision.
  • Experience of working within activity and waiting list targets
Qualifications
  • Post graduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology accredited by the British Psychological Society.
  • Further training in a specialised area of clinical practice through formal post doctoral training or an evidenced portfolio of shorter courses and supervised practice.
  • Completion of formal clinical supervisor training sufficient to be able to supervise doctoral trainees.
  • Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology.
Skills and behaviours
  • Ability to exercise the full clinical responsibility for patients psychological care and treatment within the clinical specialty and to co-ordinate the psychological care provided by others.
  • Ability to teach and train others, using a variety of complex multi-media materials suitable for presentations within public, professional and academic settings.
  • Ability to identify and employ mechanisms of clinical governance as appropriate, to support and maintain clinical practice in the face of regular exposure to highly emotive material and behaviour.
