Job description
Overview

The post holder will work in the Paediatrics department, as an integral member of the Paediatric team. The successful candidate will provide ward support as a ‘middle grade’, working alongside the consultant of the week to deliver inpatient care for paediatric patients. They will also gain experience in outpatient clinics. This post is designed for a trainee wishing to gain further experience in Acute Paediatrics within the NHS in the UK and is suitable for an experienced doctor at ST3 or higher level. The post is based in general paediatrics with a 12‑month Tier 2 placement and involves participation in the Tier 2 on‑call rota to cover General Paediatrics, with day and overnight duties averaging not more than 48 hours weekly.

This post would suit a candidate who would like to gain skills in paediatrics in both the acute setting and in the outpatient environment, with opportunities to develop knowledge and skills in sub‑specialist areas within acute paediatrics.

Responsibilities
  • Provide ward support as a middle grade and contribute to inpatient Paediatrics care alongside the consultant of the week.
  • Gain experience in outpatient clinics as part of general Paediatrics.
  • Contribute to high‑quality care for children and young people in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across disciplines (including primary and tertiary care where appropriate) to achieve an integrated service.
  • Develop skills and interests appropriate for the sub‑specialty general paediatric service.
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues within the department and in linked adult specialties; participate in clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities where appropriate.
  • Develop a special interest to supplement the skills of the current medical team.
  • Participate in the appraisal process for Tier 1 resident doctors under consultant supervision.
  • Take part in the teaching/education programme for resident doctors and medical students.
  • Maintain good communications with local General Practitioners, tertiary specialist colleagues and appropriate outside agencies.
  • Engage in Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit within the department.
  • Ensure own practice is up‑to‑date and maintain professional standards as set out by the General Medical Council.
  • Contribute to cover for colleagues during periods of planned leave and assist with arrangements for unplanned leave as part of a team.
  • Participate in medical audit and research as appropriate.

  • 12‑month Tier 2 post based in General Paediatrics.
  • Eligible to work in the National Health Service in the United Kingdom.
