Senior Clinical Fellow in Urogynaecology

Applicantsare invited for a post as Senior Clinical Fellows (ST3+ equivalent) inObstetrics and Gynaecology in Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. This is an exciting opportunity to work in afriendly, dynamic, large, teaching acute hospital trust, within a 3 consultanturogynaecology team.

Thepost holder will work at a level equivalent to that of a ST3+ trainee.Applicants must have completed Foundation competencies either as part of the UKFoundation programme or demonstrate equivalent training. Applicants shouldideally have experience at working at a ST3+ level for a minimum of 6 monthsideally within the UK. Basic LifeSupport training is essential.

Candidateswill require current and valid GMC registration.

Main duties of the job

Theabove post is suitable for doctors wishing to gain clinical experience at aST3+ level in Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Urogynaecology. The post offers the successful candidate awide range of experience in all areas of the specialty. Whilst this post isnot recognised for training, the appointee will be supported by a ClinicalSupervisor to meet their career and educational goals.

Therewill be opportunity to develop special interest in Urogynaecology

Thepost holder will also be encouraged to take part in departmental teaching andquality improvement work.

About us

Thegynaecology service is predominantly based at St James University Hospital(Chancellor Wing) and some elective gynaecology work including clinics, daycase and overnight theatre and hysteroscopy also takes place at Wharfdalehospital.

Thefertility service is based at Seacroft Hospital.

Thematernity service is based at St James University Hospital (approximately4,500 deliveries per year) and Leeds General Infirmary (approximately 5,200deliveries per year).

Job responsibilities

Thepost holder will work on the second on call (ST3+) rota, and as such will takeon the responsibilities associated with this role. The post holder will besupervised by a Consultant during clinical duties whether elective or on calland will be expected to work as part of a multidisciplinary team, demonstratinggood communication skills with all members of the team.

Theweekly timetable will vary from week to week. It will include sessions inantenatal clinic, delivery suite, urogynaecology outpatients, urogynaecologytheatre and the emergency gynaecology assessment unit. These sessions are aimedto diversify the post holders clinical experience, to provide a service and toaccommodate the rolling on call rota of long days and night shifts on labourward and the gynaecology acute treatment unit. On call frequency is 1 in 9.

UrogynaecologyThe post holder will have the opportunity to:

- Conduct the initial assessment andexamination of women with urinary incontinence, prolapse and otherurogynaecological problems in clinic under the supervision of a seniorregistrar or consultant.

- Counsel women adequately about thediagnosis, lifestyle changes, conservative treatments, further investigationswhere necessary and surgery.

- Referring to other colleagues in theteam when necessary.

- Recognise and observe the roles ofthe multidisciplinary team.

- Attend the specialist clinics such asperineal, urodynamic studies, pelvic floor and ambulatory.

- Demonstrate good communication withpatients and staff.

The post-holder will always be resident in thehospital when on duty

TheConsultant Obstetrician will be resident between 08.30-22.00 on weekdays and08.30 and 17.00 on weekends. The Consultant Gynaecologist will be residentbetween 08.30 and 17.00 on weekdays and will conduct a resident ward round onweekends. They will remain resident beyond these times if required but willotherwise be on call from home.

Thepost complies with the New Deal requirements and the European Working TimeDirective.

  • 12 months experience after full GMC registration or equivalent, and evidence of achievement of foundation competences, in line with GMC standards / Good Medical Practice; including:

  • Evidence of achievement of ST3 competencies in medicine or Surgery (as defined by the curricula relating to Core Medical training or Core Surgical Training)
  • Ability to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems
  • Ability to prioritise clinical need
  • Ability to maximise safety and minimise risk
  • Recognition of, and ability to undertake the initial management of, an acutely ill patient
  • Demonstrates understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues

  • Relevant experience in other specialties which would complement a post in Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • At least 2 years experience working in the UK
  • At least 1 year experience working at middle grade (ST3+) in UK
  • Research and audit skills:
  • Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements, e.g. degrees, prizes, awards, distinctions, publications, presentations, other achievements
  • Teaching:
  • Evidence of interest in, and experience of, teaching
  • Evidence of feedback for teaching
  • Instructor status (or a recommendation for instructor status) in an advanced life support course (ALS, ATLS, EPLS, APLS) or equivalent course
Qualifications
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Completion of Foundation competencies or equivalent
  • Basic Adult Life Support training within past 12/12
  • MRCOG Part 1
  • Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at intended start date
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent (as required to complete Foundation competences) by intended start date
  • Have completed their post-graduate training at least to a level of an ST2 specialty doctor or equivalent in obstetrics and gynaecology
  • Is up to date and fit to practise safely and is aware of own training needs.
  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues demonstrated by one of the following:
  • Applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English.
  • OR
  • Achieved the minimum score of 7 across all 4 of the following categories in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. (An overall minimum score of 7.5)
  • OR
  • Achieved the minimum Grade B across all 4 of the following categories in the Occupational English Test (OET) in medicine in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. (You must provide your candidate number)
  • If applicants believe they have adequate communication skills, but do not have evidence in one of the above forms, they must provide alternative supporting evidence of language skills
