Job description
Overview

Senior Clinical Fellow in Upper GI Surgery, Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. The closing date is 05 October 2025.

Main duties of the job

The Upper GI Senior Clinical Fellow will provide support to the Upper GI unit in the form of outpatient clinics, endoscopy and theatre sessions, in addition to ward cover and administrative duties attached to these clinical commitments. Academic activity during the post is actively encouraged. The post is an accredited oesophago-gastric cancer fellowship with the Royal College of Surgeons and is designed to provide a platform for Consultant promotion. There is a successful precedent of Consultant appointments of the last 8 post-holders.

Department Information: The Gastro-Intestinal (GI) Surgery and Gastroenterology departments have services of national and international reputation. They provide general and specialist services to patients with acute and chronic conditions, both benign and malignant. The specialties are a hybrid of medicine and surgery as they encompass diagnostic and interventional therapeutic care. In addition to serving patients with gastrointestinal conditions, gastroenterology and GI underpin other services (general medicine, emergency medicine, ENT benign and cancer pathways, GP-based care) through in-patient/out-patient review and providing endoscopic procedures. The department offers a wide range of services to patients with gastroenterological and liver disorders. The Upper GI Unit is the regional centre for oesophago-gastric cancer and specialises in oesophageal and gastric resections. As a high volume centre we perform over 100 major resections per year in addition to gastric GIST surgery. Operative approaches (right chest, left chest, transhiatal, three-stage) are tailored to patients needs using a range of laparoscopic, thoracoscopic, robotic and open techniques. We offer a pioneering one stop staging package for oesophago-gastric cancer so that patients can have a number of investigations in one visit and leave the hospital with a clear treatment plan.

About us

Our Trust values define who we are as an organisation and help shape our culture. They guide us in all our behaviours, actions and interactions which underpin how we do things.

These values were developed with the input of almost 1,800 colleagues. This has ensured that that they reflect what has changed both in our organisation and the wider world, and that they express what we want to be like, both now and in the future.

Whether you work at Guy's Hospital, St Thomas' Hospital, Evelina London Children's Hospital, Royal Brompton Hospital, Harefield Hospital, our off-site offices, or in our community services in Lambeth or Southwark, our values are relevant to you.

The values were launched in 2024, at the same time as our Trust strategy. The strategy sets out 'what' we will do, the values are the 'how' we will do it.

Our values...

Ambitious - we innovate and strive for excellence

Inclusive - we respect each other and work collaboratively

Job responsibilities

We provide surgery for all aspects of benign upper gastrointestinal disease. We have a regional complex benign upper GI MDT and a dedicated diagnostic oesophageal laboratory. We are the regional centre for early rectal and anal cancer with specialist interests in locally advanced and recurrent rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (pouch surgery and Crohns resection). We are also the regional pelvic floor unit, with regular multidisciplinary meetings held in each of these subspecialties. Our team also have interests in laparoscopic resection for both benign and malignant disease. A combined Intestinal Failure centre in conjunction with Kings College Hospital has been developed in recent years. We aspire to provide patient focused dedicated colorectal cancer care delivered through the highest quality of clinical care based on research and best practice. We also perform endocrine surgery and treatment for thyroid problems including thyroid cancer, parathyroid and adrenal diseases. We undertake surgery on regional lymph nodes, nodules, goitre and for thyrotoxicosis. Minimal access surgery for parathyroid and laparoscopic adrenalectomy is also available. As an organisation we are committed to developing our services in ways that best suit the needs of our patients.
