Job description

The post-holder will work at ST3 equivalent level and duties include trauma and elective theatre sessions, fracture and elective clinics, managing trauma and elective orthopaedic inpatients, assessing and reviewing emergency trauma admissions. The post will consist of a combination of service provision for the adult trauma and elective inpatient service and will be supported in taking study leave for professional development. An educational supervisor will be allocated to help support and mentor the post-holder both clinically and with career development.

Main duties of the job

You will provide a clinical service, with colleagues, which will include the responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.

Working with your colleagues and the multi-professional team you will have continuing responsibility for the well-being of all patients under your care. You will be required to adhere to the principles of good medical practice as laid down by the General Medical Council.

You will be required to participate in the Health Board's risk management process, clinical governance and any other healthcare governance activities within the department, the delivery unit and the Health Board. Adherence to the Caldicott Principles of information governance is mandatory.

You will participate in the on call rotas with a rotation between Neath Port Talbot and Morriston Hospitals, with prospective cover.

You will adhere to all policies which cover radiation exposures as currently outlined in IRMER regulations.

The Health Board is committed to meet its obligations to minimize infection. You will be required to comply with current procedures for the control of infection, including dress-code, to challenge non-compliance by colleagues, and to attend training in infection control provided by the Health Board.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC/GDC Registration
  • MRCS or recognised equivalent
  • 4 years full-time postgraduate training (or part-time equivalent), at least 2 of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty Or as fixed-term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty OR equivalent experience / competencies

Desirable

  • Post FRCS (Ortho or S/N)
  • Further relevant degree/diploma/teaching qualification

Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of working effectively as a part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Commitment to team approach and multi-disciplinary working
  • Up to date with current practices in Trauma and Orthopaedics or Neurosurgery
  • Teaching and training of post/undergraduate medical staff
  • Evidence of participation in, progressing and completing audit

Desirable

  • Liaison with other agencies
  • Experience of research in Orthopaedics, Neurosurgery and/or Spinal Surgery
  • Previous experience of working in the NHS/experience of NHS working practices and systems.

Skills

Essential

  • Ability to take independent clinical decisions when necessary and to seek advice from senior doctors as appropriate
