Job description
Overview

Senior Clinical Fellow (SpR-equivalent) in trauma & orthopaedic surgery at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. The post will be based at either the Royal Free Hospital or Barnet General Hospital. Elective clinics and trauma will be predominantly at the Royal Free Hospital site and Barnet General Hospital. Elective operating will be carried out predominantly at Chase Farm Hospital and some elective clinics at this site as well. The post is suitable for a person who wishes to improve their trauma and orthopaedic knowledge and skills, participate in teaching (undergraduate and postgraduate), and develop their research interests. The postholder will be supervised by a named consultant who will act as educational supervisor. The successful candidate will become part of the department, which has 24 consultant trauma and orthopaedic surgeons based across the Trust.

Responsibilities
  • Active role in the day-to-day provision of orthopaedic care to patients.
  • participate in teaching and development of teaching and research output within the department.
  • Undertake elective clinics and one to two whole day operating lists per week (subject to demand) under consultant supervision.
  • Maintain the highest clinical standards in the practice of orthopaedic surgery and undertake any reasonable clinical responsibility related to orthopaedic surgery.
  • Take part in an on-call rota including non-resident night cover.
  • Engage in the day-to-day running of the department and actively participate in departmental and academic responsibilities as allocated.
  • Engage in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, and in continuing professional development.
  • Contribute to a formal job plan agreed with the Clinical Director prior to commencement.
  • Cover all aspects of clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities, including a clear schedule of commitments; personal objectives included.
Contract and Teaching/Research Environment
  • The post is for six months in the first instance, renewable subject to staffing and agreement.
  • The postholder will be expected to participate in an on-call rota with non-resident night cover.
  • It includes teaching (undergraduate/postgraduate), research activities, and management responsibilities as agreed across the department.
  • A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee(s) and the Clinical Director prior to the start date.
