Job description

The Trauma and Orthopaedic Department treats both elective and emergency patients. There is a close relationship between the Department and the Accident and Emergency Department.

There are two operating theatres reserved exclusively for orthopaedic cases, equipped with laminar flow air supply for joint replacements. The department is fully equipped with modern osteosynthesis equipment, a full range of instrumentation for orthopaedic surgery, and mobile X-ray image intensification. An additional operating theatre is available for other cases and emergencies.

Trauma lists are scheduled for weekdays and weekends. Thirty adult beds are available on Ward 23, with children's beds on the Paediatric Ward as needed. There is a dedicated day case ward with seventeen beds for orthopaedic cases and a recently opened dedicated day surgery theatre. Other beds are available on different surgical wards.

Complex head injuries and neurosurgical conditions are referred to the Royal Free Hospital, London NW3. Plastic surgical cases, including certain hand conditions, are referred to the visiting consultant at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge, who holds a weekly outpatient clinic at Luton and Dunstable Hospital. Spinal injuries may be referred to RNOH, or Addenbrookes, or managed in-house.

This post will provide training and experience in a wide range of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery in accordance with the curriculum published by the SAC.

The duties are those of a ST3 equivalent and above in Trauma and Orthopaedics, including attendance at ward rounds and theatre sessions as determined by their Consultant, and assistance at Orthopaedic and Fracture Clinics.

The successful candidate will communicate appropriately with General Practitioners and other medical staff, both within and outside their specialty, to benefit patient care. They will also communicate with other hospitals or agencies as needed.

An important aspect of the Senior Clinical Fellow's work is supervising data collation. They will assist with planning work and establishing high standards of quality.
