CLINICAL FELLOW IN P AEDIATRIC SPINAL SURGERY (12 Months)
Applications are invited for appointment to this subspecialty in Paediatric Spinal Surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital NHS Trust as a fixed term contract of 12 months (can consider 6 months). This post is equivalent to Specialist Trainee 6+.
The aim of this post is to provide sub-specialty clinical training in all aspects of elective paediatric spinal orthopaedic surgery, in particular for rare disorders and complex procedures. Fellows will gain experience in all major areas of paediatric spinal surgery. Rotations between Consultants will ensure that the appointee will work in a variety of specialist areas. The responsibilities include preparation and surgical treatment for elective cases, outpatient clinics, audit and research. A typical week includes 2 operating days, 2 clinic days and at least one half day for research.
Applicants must have full GMC registration with a licence to practice, possess the FRCS (Orth) or equivalent and have previous experience in paediatric spinal surgery.
Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust (GOSH) is a national centre of excellence in the provision of specialist children's health care, currently delivering the widest range of specialist care of any children's hospital in the UK. GOSH and UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health form the largest paediatric research and teaching centre in the UK.
Main duties of the jobWeekly Timetable of Clinical Activities within the Department
The post holder will work with all 4 Spinal Consultants once appointed. It is expected that you will assist with other clinics and theatre lists as appropriate. Applicants are encouraged to discuss the timetable and duties with the current post holder and the consultants on appointment.
This timetable contains essentially all the activities currently taking place within the unit. The postholder will be encouraged to take part in all the activities offered within the department, particularly the theatre lists when clinic commitments permit.
Training received as part of the 12 month standalone post is not recognised by the SAC for Orthopaedic Surgery. It is however equivalent in content to the complementary 6m which forms part of the 12m fellowship post which is a SAC approved post.
In addition to training provided in clinics, ward rounds and in the operating theatre, other opportunities will be provided by attendance at teaching sessions. There is an induction programme for junior staff.
There is a monthly Spinal MDT between 8-10am with multiple members across GOSH specialties
Additional post-op clinics are also run by the registrars.
All Fellows and Registrars are expected to participate on the 1:8 On-call rota covering both Spinal and Orthopaedic patients at GOSH.
