Job summary

A leading NHS Foundation Trust in the UK is seeking a Senior Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Neurosurgery. The successful candidate will manage neurosurgical emergencies and participate in teaching within a dynamic, multidisciplinary team. Candidates must have GMC registration and relevant qualifications, including MB BS and MRCS parts 1 & 2. Qualifications

  • Must have completed a neurosurgery training program or have approval for training in another department.
  • Experience in teaching undergraduates and postgraduates is essential.
  • Demonstrable interest in paediatric Neurosurgery is required.

Senior Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Neurosurgery

We are pleased to invite applications for a Senior Clinical Fellow in Paediatric Neurosurgery at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, a leading centre of excellence in Paediatric Neurosurgical Care.

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic senior Neurosurgical Trainee to join our dynamic multidisciplinary team.

We are really proud of our hospitals and facilities - we are the only Paediatric Hospital in the UK where all the services are located under one roof.

The Neurosurgery Service based in Bristol covers the West of England & the South West Peninsula, a population of 4.5 million people. It has an established Network within the South West and West of England and delivers the full range of neurosurgical procedures.

Main duties of the job

Bristol is home to one of only four English Children's Epilepsy Surgery Centres. There is a regional complex movement disorders and spasticity MDT witha Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy service and robotic Deep Brain Stimulation. We are the regional Paediatric Major Trauma Centre. There is a regional paediatric neurovascular service offering direct and indirect revascularisation procedures, as well as interventional neuroradiology investigation and treatment and gamma knife services. There is a strong regional paediatric neuro-oncology service, with availability of intra-operative MRI, intra-operative ultrasound, image guidance with Brainlab and Stealth, a neuromate robot, operative microscope, and CUSA. UHBW Gamma Knife has recently been commissioned as an 'All Tiers' provider. As such we are now one of 4 UK national centres delivering gamma knife to all commissioned indications to adult and paediatric patients, including neurovascular disease.

We have over a decade of experience in using iMRI in paediatric units in the UK. We were the second children's hospital in the country to routinely use this technology.

Qualifications & Training
  • MB BS (or equivalent)
  • Full registration with the GMC with license to practice
  • MRCS parts 1 & 2 (or equivalent)
  • ATLS provider or equivalent
  • FRCS part 1 or 2 or equivalent
Knowledge & Experience
  • Completed neurosurgery training program in their country of origin, or, if in a current program have a letter from their current program director approving training period in another department; or
  • Have completed core surgical training or equivalent in the UK and undertaken over 12 months of Neurosurgical posts at ST3 level or higher.
  • Recent experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems & practices
  • Evidence of understanding and application of knowledge of speciality
  • Willing to seek help from senior colleagues as appropriate.
  • Demonstrable interest in paediatric Neurosurgery
Additional & Aptitudes
  • Public Sector Language Competency i.e ILETS or equivalent
  • 3 years of reference history
  • An understanding of the principles of clinical audit
  • Demonstrate interest in research
  • Evidence of contribution to published research
  • Higher Degree (e.g. MSc, PhD)
  • To have completed an Audit Project
