Senior Clinical Fellow in Neurosurgical Oncology

Job summary
Applications are invited for the position of Senior (post-CCT or ST7+) Neurosurgical Oncology Fellow at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London, starting from 7 August 2024 for 1 year.
The hospital is part of UCLH NHS Foundation Trust, ranked among the best neurosurgery hospitals globally, and is affiliated with University College London, ranked first in Europe for neuroscience.

Main duties of the job
This 1-year post is designed for senior neurosurgical trainees who have obtained their CCT (or are ST7+) and wish to develop advanced neurosurgical oncology skills. The successful applicant will work under Mr Ciaran Hill, Consultant Neurosurgeon, and collaborate with the neuro-oncology team. Responsibilities include participating in the on-call rota and cross-covering other neuro-oncology surgeons.

Fellowship Experience

Participants will gain experience in:

  • Advanced surgical techniques, including awake and asleep brain mapping, tumor resection, microsurgical and endoscopic approaches, and complex cranial microsurgery.
  • Advanced technologies such as intraoperative MRI, cranial ultrasound, fluorescent-guided technologies, neuronavigation, functional imaging, tubular retractors, endoscopy, and Gamma Knife Radiosurgery.

Roles and responsibilities

The Fellow will:

  • Review patients in multidisciplinary clinics and MDT meetings.
  • Attend outpatient clinics and joint neuro-oncology clinics.
  • Participate in preoperative, perioperative, and postoperative care, including in critical care settings.
  • Manage general neurosurgical conditions, supervise junior staff, and contribute to clinical governance and quality improvement projects.
  • Lead research and quality improvement studies, including clinical trials and data analysis, primarily in brain cancer.
  • Assist in organizing training courses and supervise undergraduate and MSc projects.

Requirements

Applicants should have:

  • Completed most of their neurosurgical training with CCT or equivalent and full GMC registration.
  • Experience in neurosurgical oncology.
  • FRCS or equivalent at application time, eligible for GMC registration, and holding a valid license to practice.

Additional qualities include motivation, dedication, understanding of surgical techniques and research principles, and excellent communication skills.

Person Specification

Key criteria include:

  • Essential: FRCS or equivalent, GMC registration, experience in neurosurgical oncology, clinical judgment, manual dexterity, emergency management competence, communication skills, leadership, IT skills, understanding of NHS policies, and infection control adherence.
  • Desirable: Higher degree, subspecialization intent, additional research experience, leadership outside medicine, and altruistic activities.
