Qualifications

Applicants are invited to apply for the position of Senior Clinical Fellow in Anaesthetics at Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The anaesthetics department is seeking enthusiastic, highly motivated and dedicated people with the ability to work with the general surgery team to provide a comprehensive service across the department.

All Medical staff employed by the Trust are expected to comply with hospital health and safety policies, clinical governance and other risk management policies.

The post holder will be contracted to provide an anaesthetic service to Milton Keynes University Hospital. Candidates must hold full registration with the General Medical Council.

  • Acute care safe: it is expected that the postholder should be acute care safe. This can be demonstrated by an up-to-date ALS certificate or equivalent.
  • Relevant specialty clinical knowledge: capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge relevant to the job. Minimum of 2 years' experience of anaesthetics in an acute care setting including elective and emergency work. Experience of obstetrics anaesthesia including epidural analgesics is important. Candidate should be able to provide evidence of this e.g. through a logbook or testimonials.
  • Clinical judgment: experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk. Knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need
  • Practical skills: shows aptitude for practical skills, required in the job.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in different clinical settings required in the job

  • Evidence of basic training in anaesthetics: the minimum time spent in basic level training will normally comprise 24 months in anaesthetics.
  • Evidence of basic competency in obstetrics anaesthesia: before being allowed to work in an obstetrics unit without direct supervision the candidate will be formally assessed as competent in the basic obstetric anaesthetics skills.
  • Evidence of basic competency in critical care: before being allowed to work in a critical care unit without direct supervision the candidate will be formally assessed as competent in the basic critical care anaesthetics skills in accordance with FICM requirements.
  • The ability to undertake pre-operative assessment, obtain consent for anaesthetic procedures and prescribe premedication
  • Be responsible for the routine induction, maintenance and recovery from general anaesthesia of ASA grade I or II patients and their safe discharge.
  • Understand the safe use or anaesthesia equipment and the use, interpretation and limitations of monitoring equipment
  • The ability to recognise ASA III, IV and V patients, understand the difficult intubation and the timing and the need to call for senior help
  • The ability to assess, resuscitate and manage a trauma patient, and when necessary to stabilise the patient and prepare for transfer
