DESCRIPTION OF HOSPITAL
NHS Grampian was formed on 1st April 2004. It incorporates Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, RoyalAberdeen Children’s Hospital and Aberdeen Maternity Hospital on the Foresterhill site. Othersites include Woodend and Royal Cornhill Hospitals in Aberdeen and Dr Gray’s Hospital inElgin as well as the out-patient facilities at Woolmanhill Hospital and palliative care facilitiesat Roxburghe House.
Peripheral out-patient clinics are provided at various hospitals throughout the north-east ofScotland and also at the hospitals in the Orkney and Shetland Isles.
Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Foresterhill, with a complement of 975 beds is situated to thenorth-west of Aberdeen city on the teaching hospital site with the Medical School of theUniversity of Aberdeen. This is the principal adult acute hospital of the Grampian Areaproviding a complete range of medical and surgical specialties including General Medicineand allied specialties (Acute Medicine, Cardiology, Respiratory, Gastroenterology, InfectiousDiseases, Neurology, Clinical Pharmacology, Stroke Medicine, Diabetes & Endocrinology,Haematology, Nephrology, Oncology, Dermatology, Blood Transfusion, Rheumatology andGeriatrics), General Surgery and allied specialties (Cardiothoracic, Vascular, Orthopaedics,Neurosurgery, Plastics, Dental, ENT & Maxillofacial, Burns, Transplantation, Ophthalmology,Urology), Gynaecology, ITU, A & E, Radiotherapy and Anaesthetics.
Aberdeen Royal Infirmary is also a major tertiary referral centre for the North and North Eastof Scotland in a number of specialties. It is situated on a large open site to the North-West ofthe city centre.
A new Emergency Care Centre, which opened in December 2012, incorporates UnscheduledCare services and the majority of the Medical specialties, and is an exciting new developmentfor NHS Grampian.
1. WORK OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ACUTE MEDICINE
Acute Medicine in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary is made up of the 30 bedded Acute MedicalInitial Assessment (AMIA), an Ambulatory Assessment Unit (RAAC) consisting of 8 to 12bays, a 22 bedded Short Stay Medical Unit (SSMU), 8 Bedded Toxicology Unit. We are abusy department based over three floors in the Matthew Hay Building (The ECC) deliveringa consultant led service assessing patients who have been identified by a primary care, emergency department clinician as requiring our specialist input. In addition, the AcuteMedical Department has a close working relationship with other areas within the Medicineand Unscheduled Care (MUSC) portfolio contributing to many initiatives related to theredesign of unscheduled care such as the Flow Navigation Hub.

Senior Clinical Fellow (IMT3/ST3+) in Acute and General Medicine
The post will be based at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with rotational posts incorporatingAcute Medicine and other medical specialties within the medical portfolio. These rotations arelikely to include any 2/3 of Geriatrics, General Internal Medicine, Cardiology, Renal andGastroenterology. Successful applicants will also be given the opportunity to spend time in
ICM if required for IMT3 completion equivalence.
3. DUTIES
Clinical Duties - The successful candidate will be expected to make a full contribution to therole of the ward in which they are based. They will also contribute to the Hospital at NightRota. You will be on the rota commensurate with your level of experience – anticipated to be
at Registrar level.
AIM specific duties: Management of the acute take, ward rounds in AMIA and the short staymedical unit/Toxicology. Time supporting the Acute Medicine Ambulatory Care service(RAAC). There is also an expectation that successful applicants would be involved insupervising junior colleagues and supporting educational programs within the unit. AcuteMedical Team, and their associated areas of work.
Geriatrics specific duties. Ward rounds and comprehensive Geriatric assessment within theGeriatric Assessment unit and as part of Frailty Outreach into Acute Medicine and EDdepartment. There will be opportunities to participate in the work of the Hospital at home teamas well as contributing to the QI and teaching programme.
Renal Specific Duties: Expectation you will cover, on a rotational basis, inpatient dutyin renal ward, acute referrals from elsewhere including dialysis unit queries, ICU andGP calls. Opportunities to gain experience in dialysis line insertion and kidneybiopsies. Contribute to out-of-hours work. Opportunities to participate in a variety of renalclinics.
Cardiology Specific Duties: Ward rounds within the main cardiology ward and CoronaryCare. Daytime on call duties covering calls for advice within ARI and across other North ofScotland sites (supported by ST on call). Opportunities for clinic involvement and echotraining. Opportunities to attend Cath lab for angiography/pacing/EP dependent on interests.
Gastroenterology Specific duties: Ward rounds within main GI ward as well as seeing anyboarded patients. On call for GI providing advice/reviews from other specialties in ARI, DrGrays and GPs supported by on call consultant. Opportunities to perform procedures withinthe GI ward such as ascitic tap and drainage. During non on call weeks allocated to 2
clinics. If interested in a career in GI then can take up an offer for upper GI simulator trainingand hands on upper GI training if opportunity arises. Contribute to the ward based teachingprogramme.
Audit Opportunities - An important aspect of all levels of training is to take part in, and initiateclinical audit projects. It is expected that throughout all the attachments the successfulapplicant will participate in unit audit and educational meetings.
Medical Education and Research Opportunities – There is a strong link between AberdeenMedical School and the department. It is actively involved in medical education and we arebeginning to develop an increasing research portfolio.
4. LOCATION OF DUTIES
The post will be located at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
5. EMERGENCY DUTIES
Medical staff will also be required to perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseencircumstances and at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation wherepracticable with colleagues, both senior and junior.
It has been agreed between the professions and the Departments that while medical staffaccept that they will perform such duties, it is stressed that additional commitments arisingunder the sub-section are exceptional and, in particular, that these doctors should not berequired to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.
6. STUDY AND TRAINING
There will be a Study Leave time and relevant budget along with NHS Grampian Policy.Extensive library facilities are provided in the Medical School Library on the Foresterhill site.
7. MAIN CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
The post of Senior Clinical Fellow is covered by the Terms and Conditions of Service forHospital Medical and Dental Staff. We would consider applications from those who wish to work less than fulltime.
