Job description

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Clinical Engineer with at least several years at Band 5 or above in the NHS to join the team at Dorset County Hospital. We will prioritise candidates with such experience over those with formal academic qualifications; however, we are willing to consider those with less experience for initial appointment at Band 5.

This post is part of the Clinical Engineering service that Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust may transfer to an NHS ‘wholly owned subsidiary’; the proposed date of transfer is in October 2025. The wholly owned subsidiary will continue to offer NHS Agenda for Change Terms and Conditions to current employees who transfer in October as well as to new employees recruited after that date. Responsibilities

• As a Senior Clinical Engineer, participate in strategic decision making around medical device replacement within the capital programme, and independently undertake commissioning checks, calibration and maintenance of new devices and equipment including syringe pumps, diathermy machines, ventilators, anaesthetic machines and defibrillators.
• Demonstrate new equipment and devices to clinical staff and update service records accordingly.
• Become a lead in medical device connectivity as the technology advances across the Trust (e.g. through the new E.H.R system to be commissioned in 2028).
• Supervise Clinical Engineers, trainee Clinical Technologists and Equipment Library Technicians when required.
• Undertake the repair, maintenance and repair of high value electronic and mechanical devices and equipment used in the diagnosis and treatment of patients; advise end users on the acquisition, safe use and disposal of medical devices and other appropriate equipment in line with the MHRA Managing Medical Devices Regulations 2014/2021.
• Order parts and accessories for medical devices and equipment.
• Monitor and rotate stock levels to ensure minimal wastage.
• Review working practices, advise on changes and suggest efficiency improvements.

Qualifications and experience

• Experience at Band 5 or above in NHS Clinical Engineering is preferred; priority given to candidates with such experience.
• Evidence of ability to commission, calibrate, maintain and Repair medical devices and equipment such as syringe pumps, diathermy machines, ventilators, anaesthetic machines and defibrillators.
• Ability to work with clinical staff to demonstrate new equipment and to support adoption of new technology.
• Ability to supervise other staff as required.
• Knowledge of MHRA regulations (Managing Medical Devices) 2014/2021 is desirable.
