Job summary

GHD is seeking a Senior Civil Structural Engineer in Leeds or Newcastle with hybrid working (3 days in the office / 2 days at home) to help shape UK water infrastructure. You will lead multidisciplinary design teams, deliver robust civil and structural solutions across water and wastewater projects, and mentor junior engineers.

You will contribute to AMP8 programmes, engage clients and stakeholders, and drive technical excellence within a supportive environment.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience in civil and structural engineering, ideally in UK water sector.
• Experience designing reinforced concrete structures.
• Knowledge of water and wastewater sector design standards and Eurocodes.

Responsibilities

• Lead civil and structural design activities for water and wastewater projects.
• Prepare and review engineering calculations, reports and specifications.
• Deliver reinforced concrete and structural designs for water-retaining and buried structures.

The UK water sector is entering one of the most significant investment periods in decades. As AMP8 delivery gathers pace, we are looking for a Senior Civil Structural Engineer to join GHD's growing Water team, based in either Leeds or Newcastle.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer with a passion for delivering resilient and sustainable infrastructure solutions across the water and wastewater sector. You'll play a key role in the design and delivery of major projects, working alongside multidisciplinary teams and supporting some of the UK's leading water utility clients.

The Opportunity

As a Senior Civil Structural Engineer, you'll contribute to the successful delivery of projects from concept and optioneering through to detailed design and construction support.

You'll be involved in a diverse range of infrastructure projects, including:

• Reinforced concrete structures
• Water-retaining structures
• Buried and underground structures
• Wastewater treatment assets
• Pumping stations and hydraulic structures
• Retaining walls and foundation design
• Asset refurbishment and upgrade programmes

Working within multidisciplinary teams, you'll collaborate with civil, structural, process, mechanical, electrical and geotechnical specialists to develop practical, innovative and buildable engineering solutions.

• Lead and undertake civil and structural design activities across water and wastewater projects.
• Prepare and review engineering calculations, technical reports and design documentation.
• Deliver reinforced concrete and structural designs for water-retaining and buried structures.
• Support the technical delivery of major AMP8 programmes and capital investment schemes.
• Mentor and develop junior engineers and graduates.
• Manage project deliverables to quality, programme and budget requirements.
• Engage confidently with clients, contractors and internal project teams.
• Contribute to work-winning activities and technical excellence initiatives.

About You

We're looking for someone with approximately 5+ years' experience in civil and structural engineering, ideally gained within the UK water sector.

You’ll bring:

• Experience designing reinforced concrete structures.
• Knowledge of water-retaining structures, tanks, chambers and buried assets.
• Experience in the water and wastewater sector.
• Understanding of retaining wall and foundation design.
• Experience preparing and checking engineering calculations, reports and technical specifications.
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
• A collaborative approach and passion for developing others.
• Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or working towards chartership.
• Experience working within major UK water frameworks.
• Knowledge of Eurocodes, British Standards and water industry design standards.
