Job Description:

Job Purpose

Job Title: Senior Engineer

Advertised Salary: £43,500 - £49,500 (depending on experience) + car cash allowance (£5,100 p.a.) + benefits

Location: Remote, with regular travel across our required areas.

We're the charity who look after and bring to life 2,000 miles of waterways across England and Wales, because we believe that life is better by water. Every role across the Trust plays its part in transforming our canals and rivers into spaces where local people want to spend time and feel better, bringing wellbeing benefits to millions.

We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Engineer to join our Asset Management team in the Solihull and Warwickshire area of the West Midlands region.

An Engineer will work as part of the supportive West Midlands asset management team but also be given an area of the waterway network which will give you hands-on experience in managing our unique historic infrastructure. You will be responsible for inspecting and assessing the condition of our assets, prioritising repair and renewal works, and supporting the operations team on minor and reactive repairs. You will act as client throughout the project lifecycle and provide technical support to other Trust departments.

As a Senior Engineer, you will provide line management, support, and mentoring to a team of Engineers and Inspectors. You will be tasked with strategic asset management roles and have a greater influence on the management of our critical assets. Working with wider Trust departments, you will aim to improve stakeholder engagement both internally and externally.

We are an ICE approved employer, providing structured learning and professional development support.

Location & coverage

Based from our West Midlands hub, this role offers remote working with attendance at our hub spaces for team collaboration. Regular travel to canals and river navigations in Solihull and Warwickshire is required, with occasional national travel.

Knowledge, Skills/Qualifications & Experience

We are proud to manage a significant collection of industrial heritage, including 2,000 miles of canals and rivers and over 8,500 structures, many listed. Our canals and navigable waters are over 200 years old, still functioning as designed, reflecting engineering excellence. The Senior Engineer will focus on maintaining these assets throughout their lifecycle, ensuring safety and accessibility for visitors and future generations. You will be part of a team providing asset management expertise, making risk-based decisions on asset investment, and supporting operations on repairs.

You will work with stakeholders to understand engineering issues and advise on risks affecting waterways and users, contributing to the safety and enjoyment of our canals, rivers, and reservoirs.

Key accountabilities:

  • Asset management for a geographical area of waterways and reservoirs.
  • Conduct scheduled asset inspections, ensuring quality and timeliness.
  • Prioritise defects based on risk assessments.
  • Define and support maintenance, repair, and renewal works, considering statutory, technical, operational, and customer needs.
  • Provide technical advice during project phases to internal teams, contractors, and volunteers.
  • Manage a team of asset inspectors monitoring infrastructure changes.
  • Support enquiries related to assets, providing accurate information.
  • Design temporary works for minor maintenance when needed.
  • Build relationships with local partners, regulators, and stakeholders to protect and improve waterways.
  • Participate in standby and call-out rotas as required.

About you

We seek an engineer with experience, good problem-solving skills, and knowledge in asset inspection and infrastructure risk assessment. Experience in engineering design principles and work planning is advantageous.

Technical requirements:

  • Degree or HND in Civil Engineering.
  • Incorporated (IEng) status or working towards it with ICE or similar.
  • Experience in engineering inspections and risk assessment.
  • Knowledge of safety standards including CDM.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development.
  • Understanding of historic infrastructure, ideally in water environments.

General skills:

  • Experience in cross-functional performance delivery.
  • Valid UK driving license (company car allowance provided).
  • Proficiency in MS Office and business software.
  • Negotiation skills.
  • Legal right to work in the UK.
  • Strong written communication and technical presentation skills.
