Forestry England are actively growing the nation’s forests, planting around 1,000 hectares of new woodland each year to support carbon sequestration and biodiversity, produce sustainable timber and create resilient landscapes for future generations.
We are looking for a Senior Woodland Creation Civil Engineer to join our fast-paced Woodland Creation team.This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in shaping the future of landscape-scale woodland expansion. You will help ensure the infrastructure for new woodlands is futureproof and offers value for money. This may include roading, drainage, recreational facilities, and utilities at a number of woodland creation sites across England. You will undertake detailed civil engineering design work on multiple projects, providing guidance and technical advice to colleagues across the country, project managing the delivery of design and physical works, developing and managing budgets, and contributing to the master planning of our woodland creation civil engineering programme.
This is a Temporary Appointment until 31st March 2028 with the possibility of extension or permanency but no guarantee. Some travel across England will be required with occasional overnight stays necessary

Where you’ll work…
The role will be based in one of our Forestry England offices in the Midlands South/West of England with flexibility for some optional blended working (see details below). Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas.

- appraise potential woodland creation sites from an engineering perspective including access, existing infrastructure and new infrastructure requirements.
- provide engineering advice and technical support. To include undertaking detailed planning, design, and coordination of civil engineering projects, completing construction ready drawings, calculations, preparing specifications, etc.
- promote and encourage a positive health and safety culture around all Civil Engineering activity.
- build professional and productive relationships with Forestry England colleagues across a variety of teams to generate buy-in and ensure smooth delivery.
- liaise with external parties to understand and lead on bespoke requirements e.g. pipeline crossings.
- complete and / or advise on tender documentation for the procurement of civil engineering activities, including advising on appropriate technical specifications.
- procurement and contract management of design and construction works as required.
- And any other tasks, reasonably requested by your line manager.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience
Essential professional and technical experience
- sound working knowledge of CDM, H&S and NEC4 contracts
- contract management skills associated with protecting the client's interest through the design and construction phase of projects
- experienced working within a team and with other disciplines and stakeholders
- experience of reviewing existing assets, including structures
- experience and knowledge of IT systems and familiar with MS office packages and the use of AutoCAD and GIS
- experienced in the use of relevant design software & other means to undertake civil engineering design to appropriate codes & standards.
- experienced in the safe design and delivery of projects, including responsibilities under CDM. Candidates should possess a relevant and up to date health and safety qualification such as IOSH, NEBOSH, SMSTS or have significant experience of current health and safety requirements
Desirable Professional And Technical Experience
- proven relevant experience in managing multiple civil engineering construction projects
- CSCS manager’s card
- professional (Incorporated or higher) membership of a relevant Civil Engineering Body
- experience of working in a forest, rural or heritage environment and able to provide evidence of applying sound civil engineering practice in ecologically sensitive environments
- experienced in the use of financial systems and tools to forecast, monitor and control costs in the delivery of civil engineering projects
- previous experience in Project Management and /or hold a Project Management qualification such as APMP and/or Prince2
