Arup’s Southampton Civil Engineering team is seeking a Senior Civil Engineer. You will manage multidisciplinary projects, lead technical deliverables, and mentor engineers and technicians, aligning with Arup’s values and growth plans for the South Coast.

Chartered status or close to it is expected, with a degree in Civil Engineering and strong communication skills. You will engage with clients and other teams, drive design excellence, and contribute to business development while delivering

Qualifications

  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status or close to achieving it.
  • Degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Strong technical background in civil engineering domains (earthworks, roads and streets, public realm, utilities, flood risk and drainage).
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with clients and professional teams.
  • Ability to manage a complex workload and multiple concurrent projects.
  • Proven track record of project delivery in the UK and/or internationally.

Responsibilities

  • Manage multidisciplinary engineering projects, plan resources and monitor commercial performance.
  • Lead preparation and review of technical deliverables (drawings, reports, specifications, presentations).
  • Line manage engineers and technicians, including appraisals and development.
  • Promote an inclusive culture and contribute to continuous quality improvement.
  • Support business development, work winning and client relationships for the South Coast growth plans.

Our Southampton civil engineering team forms part of Arup’s Energy, Water and Resources (EWR) group. Across the South region (Southampton and London offices), EWR includes approximately 130 engineers and technicians, delivering work in a variety of markets such as Transport, Energy, Water, Industry, Science and Property.

Climate change Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. Human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas.

We are looking for a Senior Civil Engineer to join our established and growing civil engineering team in Southampton.

Candidates should have excellent communication, technical and leadership skills and enjoy working collaboratively in multi-professional design teams, taking responsibility for projects from inception to completion, striving for excellence in delivery. At Arup, you will join a supportive team where you can continue to develop your technical expertise or progress into broader delivery responsibilities, with clear support for your career development.

Reporting to the Southampton Civil Engineering sub-team leader, you will be responsible for:

Managing multidisciplinary engineering projects, planning resources and monitoring commercial performance. Working closely with other teams in Arup, particularly our Buildings team in Southampton.

Leading the preparation and review of technical deliverables relevant to civil engineering including drawings, reports, specifications and presentations

Line managing technical staff (engineers and technicians) including appraisals and performance development and supporting the team as it grows.

Contributing to a culture of technical excellence and the development of technical skills within the wider team through planning and delivery of initiatives and training

Contributing to our ambitious growth plans on the South Coast through involvement in business development, work winning and client relationship management.

Is this role right for you?

A highly motivated individual, you will have achieved or be close to achieving Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status of a relevant professional institution (such as ICE or equivalent).

Your qualifications, skills and experience will include:

Degree in Civil Engineering or similar

Strong technical background in one or more areas relevant to civil engineering (earthworks, roads and streets, public realm, utilities, flood risk and drainage) as a core specialism, as well as ideally a wider interest in a complementary aspect of infrastructure development (planning and project management, sustainability, carbon management, infrastructure resilience, etc).

Excellent communication and presentation skills, and an ability to interact with clients and other members of the professional team with confidence

An ability to manage a complex and varied workload often involving multiple concurrent projects

A track record of successful project completion in UK and/or internationally

An ability to motivate and lead others in an inclusive way

An ability to focus on design excellence and a willingness to contribute to continuous quality improvement
