Job summary

SSE plc is seeking a Senior Civil Engineer to act as Technical Authority for Bridges, Buildings and Onshore Wind Turbine Foundations across SSE Renewables. You will lead inspection programmes, provide asset integrity leadership, and guide external consultants to ensure safe, compliant and cost-effective solutions.

Based in the UK with locations in Glasgow or Perth, the role spans development through operation and decommissioning, supporting an expanding renewable energy portfolio across the UK

Qualifications

• Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering with significant experience managing civil assets and/or delivering utility-scale renewable energy or large-scale infrastructure projects.
• Chartered Engineer status with ICE or IStructE.
• Strong knowledge of bridges, buildings and onshore wind turbine foundations.
• Experience reviewing engineering studies, reports, drawings and contractor deliverables.
• Willingness to travel regularly to project and operational sites.

Responsibilities

• Lead and deliver an annual programme of inspections, monitoring and asset assurance for bridges, buildings and wind foundations.
• Provide technical leadership on asset integrity issues and develop mitigations and solutions.
• Manage external consultants and contractors to deliver studies, designs and reports to a high standard.
• Review and optimise engineering solutions balancing safety, cost and long-term asset performance.
• Support renewable projects through development, procurement, construction and operation with due diligence and value engineering.

Base Location: You'll be expected to spend 50% of your working week in one of the following locations: Glasgow or Perth whilst other SSER locations can be considered.

Salary: £59,800 - £89,800 + car /car allowance - if applicable + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

The role

As a Senior Civil Engineer, you'll act as the Technical Authority for Bridges, Buildings and Onshore Wind Turbine Foundations across SSE Renewables' Onshore Wind, Solar and Battery portfolio. You'll provide technical leadership across some of our most critical assets while influencing projects from early-stage development through construction, operation and ultimately decommissioning.

This is an opportunity to shape how we manage and develop civil infrastructure across a growing international renewable energy portfolio spanning the UK, Ireland and Europe.

Working at the heart of the business, you'll combine engineering excellence, commercial awareness and strategic thinking to ensure our assets remain safe, reliable and ready to support SSE's ambition to deliver clean, affordable and available electricity for all. As Technical Authority, you'll own the standards, governance and technical direction for Bridges, Buildings and Onshore Wind Turbine Foundations, ensuring decisions are informed, proportionate and focused on long-term value and operational performance.

You will

• Lead and deliver an annual programme of inspections, monitoring and asset assurance activities across bridges, buildings and onshore wind turbine foundations, ensuring assets remain safe, compliant and fit for purpose.
• Provide technical leadership on asset integrity issues, developing mitigations and engineering solutions, and supporting operational businesses with the design work required to implement them.
• Manage external engineering consultants and specialist contractors, ensuring high-quality, consistent and timely delivery of engineering studies, designs, technical reports and other key outputs.
• Review, challenge and optimise engineering solutions, designs and technical specifications, balancing safety, compliance, constructability, cost, risk and long-term asset performance.
• Support renewable energy projects through development, procurement, construction and operational phases, providing technical due diligence, supplier evaluation, contractor selection, risk management, value engineering and continuous improvement expertise.

You have

• A degree in Civil or Structural Engineering together with significant experience managing civil assets and/or delivering utility-scale renewable energy or other large-scale infrastructure projects.
• Chartered Engineer status with either the ICE or IStructE.
• Strong technical knowledge and practical experience in the design, assessment and management of bridges, industrial buildings and onshore wind turbine foundations.
• Experience reviewing and approving engineering studies, technical reports, drawings, calculations and contractor deliverables, supported by a sound understanding of engineering standards, permitting requirements and project development processes.
• Strong leadership, stakeholder management and commercial awareness skills, with a willingness to travel regularly to project and operational sites.
