Job summary

SGS Middlesbrough is seeking an experienced chemist to join our environmental and oil & gas testing laboratory. You will analyse water, soil, and environmental samples and contribute to delivering high-quality services to diverse customers.

The role requires hands-on use of GC-MS, GC-FID, HPLC, and LC-MS techniques, adherence to ISO 17025, and collaboration with colleagues to drive accuracy and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • Experience in a laboratory environment with GC-MS, GC-FID, HPLC, LC-MS or ICP.
  • Knowledge of ISO 17025 or regulated laboratory quality systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Chemistry or related scientific degree.
  • Good computer skills and experience with LIMS.

Responsibilities

  • Analyse water, soil, and environmental samples using organic testing techniques.
  • Operate and maintain analytical instrumentation including GC, GC-MS, and HPLC.
  • Develop, validate and improve test methods to enhance laboratory capability.
  • Interpret and report results accurately using LIMS.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Analysing water, soil, and environmental samples using a range of organic testing techniques.
  • Operating and maintaining analytical instrumentation, including GC, GC-MS, and HPLC.
  • Developing, validating, and improving test methods to enhance laboratory capability.
  • Interpreting and reporting results accurately using our Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Ensuring all testing is carried out in line with ISO 17025 and laboratory quality standards.
  • Investigating quality issues and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborating with colleagues to deliver accurate results and exceptional service to customers.
Qualifications

We're open to candidates from a variety of chemistry and laboratory backgrounds. If you've worked with analytical instrumentation, environmental testing, oil & gas, petrochemical, water, industrial, or commercial laboratory services, we'd love to hear from you.

  • Experience working in a laboratory environment, ideally with GC-MS, GC-FID, HPLC, LC-MS, ICP, or similar analytical techniques.
  • Knowledge of ISO 17025 or other regulated laboratory quality systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • A qualification in Chemistry or a related scientific discipline.
  • Good computer skills, including experience using LIMS or other laboratory software.
  • Full UK driving licence.
