Job description

Job Description

Job Title: Senior Chemical Process Engineer

Type: Full-Time / Hybrid

Location: Derby, Raynesway

We are seeking capable, experienced, and proactive individuals to join our growing team as Senior Chemical Process Engineers. These high-impact roles are ideal for engineers who thrive on technical complexity, process rigor, and innovation with purpose. This is an opportunity to leverage your deep chemical engineering experience to contribute to the regeneration of the Raynesway Nuclear Licensed Site, part of a major infrastructure programme replacing current facilities with modern, state-of-the-art manufacturing capabilities.

You will work across multiple projects and lifecycle stages to ensure your areas meet engineering and project requirements. You will interact with various internal and external stakeholders and will be supported by a community of around 3,000 engineers in the Submarines business, with training and development opportunities to enhance your skills.

The role is based in Derby with opportunities for hybrid working. While experience with nuclear facilities is advantageous, we welcome applications from those interested in applying their existing capabilities in a new area. The key is having the right approach—working collaboratively with engineers from other disciplines to ensure chemical engineering is an integral part of the overall engineering solution.

Responsibilities:
  1. Act as 'Intelligent Customer' for chemical engineering aspects of design and construction, including process design, mass & energy balances, hazard studies, and calculations.
  2. Ensure principles of inherent safety, hierarchy of controls, and simplification are embedded into designs.
  3. Lead the development of requirements and design options for chemical engineering packages.
  4. Provide assurance that requirements are incorporated into design and construction, reviewing documentation and drawings produced by external supply chains.
  5. Contribute to engineering processes, plans, strategies, and safety/environmental documentation.
  6. Implement engineering controls on chemical process work internally and externally.
  7. Ensure proper commissioning and decommissioning of chemical systems.
  8. Support the Engineering Manager in ensuring SQEP personnel perform chemical engineering work.
  9. Provide technical authority, mentorship, and review for junior engineers and cross-functional teams.
Candidate Profile:

We seek candidates with a Chemical/Process Engineering degree or equivalent, with experience in designing, constructing, and operating nuclear and/or conventional facilities within the UK. Familiarity with Nuclear Site Licensing Conditions, SAPs, and TAGs is advantageous. Experience with high hazard sites (e.g., COMAH), process safety tools, and nuclear safety case production is desirable.

Applicants should be Chartered Engineers or working towards Chartered/Incorporated status and possess knowledge of relevant regulations, codes, and standards.
