Job Summary

This opportunity is for a Senior Neonatal Nursing Sister within a Level 3 neonatal unit. The role involves providing specialist neonatal clinical care and leadership for the nursing team with a particular specialist interest in Quality Improvement.

  • Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.

  • Lead and manage nursing and support teams, driving high standards of patient care.
  • Champion infection prevention and control, clinical governance and evidence based practice.
  • Act as a role model, demonstrating Trust values and accountable clinical practice.

Job Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate an advanced level of knowledge and clinical nursing practice by delivering evidence-based care.
  • Lead, co‑ordinate and manage the tertiary service workload using expert clinical judgement and decision-making skills, in collaboration where required with the service consultant whilst maintaining safe standards of care.
  • Competent in the use of medical devices and responsible for the correct use of specialist equipment by the multidisciplinary team.
  • Promote a positive and professional working environment.
  • Provide clinical supervision to staff.
  • Lead emergency situations within the clinical practice areas where appropriate.
  • Liaise with and report to the multidisciplinary team in the provision of family‑centred care.
  • Identify, manage and refer appropriately infants requiring Safeguarding assessment.
  • Co‑ordinate and manage infant discharge/transfer to other care services.
  • Encourage parents and carers to be actively involved in the planning and delivery of care to their infant.
  • Responsible for the development, implementation and compliance with local policies and guidelines.
  • Promote health education within the clinical area for families.
  • Act as a role model in practising evidence-based nursing care.
Qualifications
  • Essential: First Level Qualification – RGN, RSCN, RN Child Branch; Current Registration with NMC; Recognised Qualified in Speciality course.
  • Desirable: Degree in Nursing; Working towards degree/MSc.
Knowledge & Experience
  • Essential: Demonstrable experience in neonatal intensive care in a similar role; Management and leadership skills; Demonstrable experience in recruitment, selection and personnel management.
  • Desirable: Proven knowledge of HR processes; Proven knowledge and demonstrable experience of hospital budgets/funds.
Aptitude and Abilities
  • Essential: Incorporates customer care in the clinical setting; Competent in numeracy and literacy.
  • Desirable: Participation in research and audit projects.
