Job Description:

IPS Group are working on behalf of a major global Insurer who are seeking a motivated and experienced Casualty Underwriter to join our Birmingham-based team as a Senior Casualty Underwriter. This role is ideal for an established Senior Underwriter or an ambitious Underwriter ready to take the next step in their career. While the primary focus is on casualty risks, there is an element of property underwriting involved—offering a well-rounded and challenging opportunity for the right candidate.

About the Role

As a key member of our Property & Casualty (P&C) team, you’ll be responsible for developing and underwriting a profitable book of mid-market casualty business, including both new and renewal accounts. You’ll work closely with a broad broker network, applying your technical expertise and market insight to structure deals that meet client needs and drive portfolio growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Underwrite and manage a diverse portfolio with a primary focus on casualty risks and a smaller share of property business.
  • Collaborate with brokers to understand client needs, negotiate pricing and terms, and communicate underwriting appetite.
  • Develop strong relationships across the regional broker market and attend market-facing events to generate new business.
  • Support cross-selling opportunities by working alongside underwriters in other product lines and distribution teams.
  • Deliver high-quality client service with a proactive, timely, and solution-oriented approach.
  • Contribute to strategic growth targets and drive profitable underwriting decisions.
  • Mentor junior colleagues and support the broader development of underwriting talent in the team.

Key requirements

  • Proven experience in casualty underwriting (or broader P&C), with exposure to property insurance as a plus.
  • A strong network of regional broker contacts and a commercial mindset.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship management skills.
  • Strong time management, organizational ability, and attention to detail.
  • Interest in coaching or mentoring junior colleagues—formal experience is a bonus but not required.
