Job summary

Southend University Hospital NHS Trust in the Basildon area invites applications for a Senior Clinical Fellow in Cardiothoracic Surgery (ST6+). You will join a dedicated Cardiothoracic Team to support emergency, urgent and elective services and help manage the Surgery Programme.

You will work flexibly with colleagues, supervise the surgical care practitioner and trainees, and participate in teaching and multidisciplinary meetings.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3–4 years’ experience in cardiothoracic surgery.
• Ability to work flexibly with colleagues including clinical fellows and consultants.
• Willingness to supervise the surgical care practitioner and foundation year trainees.

Responsibilities

• Help with efficient running of the aortic surveillance clinics.
• Attend and assist at Outpatients clinics, ensuring clinic letters are dictated promptly.
• Make formal ward rounds daily, including weekends and bank holidays; treat rounds as teaching opportunities.
• Participate in multi-disciplinary clinical meetings and monthly Clinical Audit Day; maintain and develop standards through audit and research.
• Organise (where required) and participate in out of hours cover for the unit.
• On-call responsibilities include night-time supervision of care for surgical patients including those in HDU/ICU.
• Communicate with Consultants regarding patient management.
• Weekend on-call responsibilities including ward rounds and emergency operations and assessment of in-patients and external referrals.
• Advise on discharge of patients under the care of the cardiothoracic surgical Consultants.
• Perform surgery appropriate to experience under direction of, or with the assistance of, the Consultant.
