The Role
Unite Students' fantastic Sustainability team is looking for an experienced Senior Carbon and Climate Manager to join us in Bristol.
The Senior Carbon and Climate Manager is a new role that offers an exciting opportunity to lead our transition to net zero carbon. The role will enhance our Sustainability Team's capacity and expertise, focusing on a crucial area. The successful candidate will report to the Head of Sustainability and will be responsible for updating and maintaining our net zero carbon targets and pathways, transition planning, carbon pricing and offsetting strategies, assessing and managing climate-related risks, reporting and disclosure, and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and best practice frameworks such as SBTi, CRREM, UK Net Zero Carbon Building Standard, TPT guidance, TCFD, IFRS S1/S2, and SFDR.
What You'll Be Doing
- Lead assessment and management of climate-related risks and opportunities, including analysis, scenario modelling, and planning to ensure they are understood, managed, mitigated, reported, and integrated into business planning and decision-making, in line with broader risk management standards like TCFD and IFRS S1/S2.
- Update and re-baseline our net zero carbon targets and pathways as frameworks evolve, such as SBTi, CRREM, TCFD, and UK NZC Building Standard, to support our ongoing net zero strategy.
- Support the evolution of our Asset Transition Plans (ATPs) and overarching Transition Plan, including climate risk mitigation, adaptation plans, and monitoring of energy and carbon savings, ensuring they incorporate emerging technologies and adapt to changing portfolio and targets.
- Monitor asset performance to evaluate the impact of capital projects, report progress, and assess potential asset stranding risks.
- Conduct data analysis and modelling for planning, performance monitoring, and reporting in accordance with our targets, KPIs, and external frameworks like CDP, GRESB, EPRA sBPR, RE100, and reporting standards such as SECR, TCFD, IFRS S1/S2, SFDR, including data verification and assurance.
- Develop and implement robust carbon offsetting and carbon pricing strategies to facilitate our net zero transition.
- Assist the wider team and business units in embedding carbon and climate considerations within finance, reporting, risk management, asset management, and development functions.
What We’re Looking for in You
- A passion for sustainability with a strong background in carbon and climate issues.
- Experience in climate risk assessment, scenario modelling, management, and reporting aligned with best practices (including GHG Protocol, TCFD, SECR, IFRS S1/S2, SFDR).
- Knowledge of net zero targets and frameworks (SBTi, CRREM, UK Net Zero Carbon Building Standard, RE100) and experience developing and implementing transition plans.
- Numerate, analytical, and methodical, with proficiency in handling large datasets using tools like Excel, Tableau, or proprietary systems for analysis, visualisation, and reporting.
- Understanding of residual carbon mitigation, offsetting, and internal carbon pricing.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of summarising complex data and collaborating effectively across functions such as Estates, Procurement, Project Delivery, Asset Management, and Sustainability.
