Job description

The Role

Unite Students` fantastic Sustainability team are looking for an experienced Senior Carbon and Climate Manager to join us in Bristol.

The Senior Carbon and Climate Manager is a new role that provides an exciting opportunity to play a leading part in our transition to net zero carbon. The role will bring additional capacity and capability to our Sustainability Team, specialising in an area of growing importance. The successful candidate will report to the Head of Sustainability and lead on updating and maintaining our net zero carbon targets and pathway, transition planning, carbon pricing and offsetting strategy, assessing and managing climate related risk, reporting and disclosure, and compliance and alignment with relevant regulations and best practice frameworks such as SBTi, CRREM, UK Net Zero Carbon Building Standard, TPT guidance, TCFD, IFRS S1/S2, and SFDR.

What You`ll Be Doing

  • Lead on assessment and management of climate related risks and opportunities, including analysis, scenario modelling, and planning to ensure they are understood, manged, mitigated, reported and factored into business planning and decision making, in accordance with wider risk management practices and standards such as TCFD and IFRS S1/S2.
  • Update and re-baseline our net zero carbon targets and pathway as required in line with the evolution of frameworks such as SBTi, CREEM, TCFD, UK NZC Building Standard, to inform the ongoing development of our net zero carbon pathway.
  • Support the ongoing evolution of our current Asset Transition Plans (ATPs) and overarching Transition Plan in line with our net zero carbon ambition, including climate-related risk mitigation and adaptation plans, and monitoring and verification (M&V) of energy/carbon savings, to ensure they account for emerging technology and opportunities, a changing portfolio, and evolving net zero carbon requirements and targets.
  • Track individual asset performance to assess impact of capital projects, report on progress, and understand potential asset stranding risk.
  • Undertake data analysis and modelling to support planning, performance monitoring, and internal and external reporting in line with our targets and KPIs, external frameworks (CDP, GRESB, EPRA sBPR, RE100 etc), and reporting requirements (SECR, TCFD, IFRS S1/S2, SFDR, etc), including verification and assurance of reported data.
  • Develop robust carbon offsetting and carbon pricing strategy to support our transition to net zero carbon.
  • Support the wider team and business to embed carbon and climate management within relevant functions such as finance, group reporting, risk and assurance, asset management and development.

What We`re Looking for in You

  • Passionate about sustainability and keen to make a real difference, with a strong background in carbon and climate.
  • Experience of climate related risk assessment, scenario modelling, management and reporting in line with best practice (including GHG Protocol, TCFD, SECR, IFRS S1/S2, SFDR etc).
  • Experience and good knowledge of net zero carbon and climate related targets and frameworks (including SBTi, CRREM, UK Net Zero Carbon Building Standard, RE100 etc), and the development and implementation of net zero carbon transition plans.
  • Numerate, analytical and methodical, with experience and ability handling large data sets using analytics tools (Excel, Tableau, proprietary tools and systems etc) to undertake analysis, scenario modelling, data visualisation and reporting to generate actionable insight that informs planning, decision making, and internal and external reporting and disclosure.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of residual carbon mitigation and offsetting, and of internal carbon pricing.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, able to summarise communicating findings from complex data and to collaboration with key functions such as Estates, Procurement, Project Delivery, Asset Management and the wider Sustainability Team in implementation of our net zero carbon plans.
