Job summary

Nicholas Associates Group Limited in Sheffield seeks a Senior Carbon Chemist to lead development of carbon materials from our client’s new technology. The successful candidate will have catalyst development/optimisation experience and work within a multidisciplinary team.

You will design routes to generate high-value carbon materials, evaluate applications, and characterise using BET, XRD and SEM, while optimising processes for energy efficiency and supporting scale-up with the chemistry team.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in chemistry (advanced degree)
• 5+ years of post-university research in carbon materials or related field
• Experience with microwave energy-driven chemical reactions desirable
• Knowledge of carbon material characteristics and activation methods
• Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols and practices
• Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work independently with strong collaborative working within a small multidisciplinary team

Responsibilities

• Design routes to generate high-value carbon materials from base carbon materials
• Evaluate upgraded carbon materials for high-value applications
• Characterise carbon materials using techniques such as BET, XRD, SEM
• Optimise processes for energy/consumables efficiency
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop production methods
• Support catalyst production operations alongside carbon materials development
• Support scale-up activities with the existing chemistry team
• Ensure safety compliance and maintain a clean laboratory workspace
