As a result, alongside several consortium partners; Balfour Beatty have been selected by bp (British Petroleum) to construct a first-of-a-kind fully integrated gas‑fired power station with carbon capture and storage which is a key driving force behind plans to make Teesside the UK’s first decarbonised industrial cluster.
Balfour Beatty is seeking a dynamic Senior CAD Technician to contribute to the Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project based at our site in Redcar and Cleveland.
The Senior CAD Technician will prepare and update drawings, details, schematics and technical information across several construction disciplines and work fronts.
The role will support the production of information associated with:
- Temporary works layouts, sketches, details and construction support drawings
- Method statement, permit and safety‑critical work plans
- Plant and vehicle management plans
- Traffic management layouts, access routes and vehicle movement plans
- Compound layouts, welfare layouts, logistics plans and storage arrangements
- Exclusion zones, pedestrian routes, emergency routes and segregated access plans
- Drainage, ducting, service routes, utilities interfaces, tanks, chambers and temporary services
- Accommodation, offices, welfare areas, stores, workshops, warehouses and portal frame buildings
- Road layouts, haul roads, car parks, surfacing, kerbing, barriers, gates, fencing and signage
- Laydown areas, material handling zones, delivery areas and lifting interface plans
- General construction details, mark‑ups, red‑line amendments, as‑built information and handover records
The role will support temporary works and construction engineering teams by producing drawings under direction of engineers, temporary works coordinators, temporary works designers or other competent persons. The role does not, by itself, make the post‑holder the temporary works designer unless separately appointed.
General
This is a senior technical support role within a busy construction site environment. The post‑holder will be expected to work across several disciplines and produce clear, accurate and practical drawings that support safe delivery. The role requires strong attention to detail, good construction awareness, disciplined drawing control and the ability to manage drawing priorities with limited supervision.
Operational
- Support live construction teams with timely drawing information
- Respond to changing site priorities while maintaining accuracy and drawing control
- Attend site where required to understand constraints, verify information and support drawing development
- Work with engineers, supervisors and subcontractors to convert practical site requirements into clear drawings
- Help maintain consistency between site mark‑ups, controlled drawings, models, sketches and final records
Quality and Records
- Maintain drawing registers, revisions, superseded information and controlled issue records
- Ensure drawings are correctly titled, numbered, referenced and issued through the agreed project systems
- Manage updates, red‑line mark‑ups, as‑built information and final drawing records
- Support quality, handover and document control processes by producing accurate and traceable drawing information
- Keep project files organised and available for review, audit and future reference
What you'll be doing
Technical
- Produce accurate 2D drawings, 3D models, layouts, schematics, sketches and construction details
- Translate engineer mark‑ups, rough sketches, survey information and site instructions into controlled drawings
- Detail a range of construction operations, temporary works interfaces and site logistics arrangements
- Maintain drawing accuracy, scale, layering, coordinates, references, revision control and title block information
- Check drawings for clarity, consistency, buildability and alignment with project standards
- Support interface, clash and coordination reviews using 3D models where required
- Produce drawing information suitable for review, briefing, construction, planning, logistics, temporary works and handover
Software
The role requires strong working knowledge of Autodesk products, including:
- AutoCAD
- Civil 3D
- Navisworks Manage / Navisworks Simulate
- BIM360 Field
- Revit, where required
- AutoCAD Map 3D, where applicable
- Autodesk Vehicle Tracking, where applicable
- ReCap Pro, where point cloud or survey data is used
- Autodesk Construction Cloud / BIM 360, where used for document control or model sharing
- Experience with Bentley systems would be beneficial, including MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, ProjectWise or related Bentley design and collaboration tools
- Experience with Bluebeam Revu or similar PDF markup and drawing review tools would also be useful
Drawing Production and Technical Drafting
- Produce and update 2D CAD drawings, 3D models, sketches, schematics, technical layouts and construction details
- Prepare drawings from engineer instructions, sketches, red‑line mark‑ups, survey information, site records and model information
- Support the production of temporary works, logistics, traffic management, compound, plant movement, utilities interface and construction support drawings
- Produce clear drawings suitable for review, briefing, construction, coordination and handover
- Maintain high standards of accuracy, presentation, layering, scaling, dimensions, references and drawing control
Temporary Works and Construction Support
- Produce drawings and sketches to support temporary works planning, construction methodology and site coordination
- Prepare layouts and details for temporary platforms, access routes, crane positions, excavation interfaces, service protection, exclusion zones and temporary construction arrangements
- Work under the direction of the relevant engineer, Temporary Works Coordinator or Temporary Works Designer when producing temporary works support information
- Support the development of construction sequencing, method statement drawings, permit sketches and safety‑critical work plans
- Challenge unclear information or unsafe assumptions where a drawing could affect construction safety or delivery
Site Logistics, Access and Traffic Management
- Prepare plant and vehicle management layouts, pedestrian segregation plans, traffic routes, delivery routes and access control plans
- Support compound development through layout drawings for welfare, offices, car parks, laydown, storage, services, security and logistics
- Produce layouts for barriers, fencing, gates, signage, emergency routes, exclusion zones and material handling areas
- Update drawings as site conditions, work phases, access arrangements or construction methods change
- Maintain awareness of live site constraints, service corridors, delivery routes and construction sequencing
Who we're looking for
The Following Experience And Qualities Are Essential
- Proven CAD experience within construction, civil engineering, infrastructure, industrial, energy or a similar technical environment
- Strong working knowledge of AutoCAD and Civil 3D
- Experience producing 2D construction drawings, layouts, details, schematics and drawing updates
- Ability to interpret sketches, mark‑ups, survey information, technical instructions, models and red‑line drawings
- Ability to produce accurate drawings with limited supervision
- Good understanding of drawing control, revision management and document management processes
- Strong attention to detail and ability to produce accurate work with minimal errors
- Ability to manage several drawing tasks at once and work to agreed deadlines
- Good communication skills and confidence working with engineers, supervisors, subcontractors and construction teams
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word and Excel
The Following Experience And Qualities Are Desirable
- Experience using Navisworks for model review, coordination or clash/interface checking
- Experience using Revit, InfraWorks, AutoCAD Map 3D, Autodesk Vehicle Tracking or ReCap Pro
- Bentley experience, including MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer, ProjectWise or related systems
- Experience producing temporary works, traffic management, logistics, compound, plant and vehicle management or safety‑critical work drawings
- Experience working on major infrastructure, highways, energy, industrial, utilities, process, rail, aviation or heavy civils projects
- Experience with 3D models, point clouds, survey data, as‑built records and construction handover information
- Experience with Bluebeam Revu or similar drawing review tools
- HNC, HND, ONC or equivalent qualification in engineering, construction, CAD, design or a related discipline
- Formal AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, Navisworks or BIM‑related training
Coordination and Interface Management
- Coordinate drawing information across civils, utilities interfaces, accommodation, M&E, security, logistics, traffic management, temporary works and follow‑on trades
- Support coordination reviews using Navisworks or other 3D tools where required
- Identify drawing conflicts, missing information, unclear mark‑ups or interface issues and raise them promptly
- Work with engineers, supervisors and designers to refine and correct drawings
- Support clash, access, buildability and safety reviews through clear visual information
Drawing Control, Records and Handover
- Maintain drawing registers, revisions, superseded drawings and controlled issue records
- Ensure drawings are correctly titled, numbered, referenced and issued through the agreed project systems
- Manage updates, red‑line mark‑ups, as‑built information and final drawing records
- Support quality, handover and document control by producing accurate and traceable drawing information
- Keep CAD files, PDFs, model exports, references and supporting information organised and accessible Communication and Delivery
- Work independently to manage drawing priorities and meet agreed deadlines
- Communicate clearly with engineers, supervisors, designers, temporary works teams and document control
- Provide regular updates on drawing progress, missing information and constraints
- Manage several drawing tasks at once while maintaining accuracy and version control
- Support the wider construction team with practical, timely and well‑presented technical information
