Job summary

AECOM is seeking an experienced Senior Cable System Design Engineer to join our growing Transmission & Distribution team in the UK. You will lead full lifecycle cable engineering from feasibility to commissioning across onshore projects, engaging with clients and multi-disciplinary teams.

You will review LV/HV cable designs, perform route studies, and support installation, FAT/SAT, and commissioning activities, while ensuring compliance with international standards and working with CYMCAP,

Qualifications

• Experience in Cable System Design Engineering for HV/EHV transmission and distribution projects; FEED experience is essential.
• Knowledge of working within IEC, CIGRÉ, and NG-TPs standards.
• Experience with CYMCAP, WinCable, AutoCAD, Revit, GIS, and mechanical simulation tools.
• Minimum HNC in Electrical Engineering; Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards chartership.

Responsibilities

• Deliver full lifecycle cable engineering packages from feasibility through to detailed design, installation support, and commissioning.
• Review complex HV cable system designs, including route development, burial risk assessments, thermal, electromagnetic, and mechanical calculations.
• Carry out cable pulling, jointing, cleating, and installation feasibility studies.
• Collaborate with civil, structural, substation and OHL teams for integrated solutions.
• Conduct third-party inspections and support FAT/SAT, installation, and commissioning activities.
• Interface with manufacturers, suppliers, and contractors to verify IEC, CIGRÉ, NG-TPs compliance.
• Participate in client meetings, workshops, HAZID/HAZOPs, and multidisciplinary coordination.

As part of this exciting role, you'll get the chance to work on innovative and varied projects - from feasibility and concept through to detailed design, installation supervision, and commissioning of onshore infrastructure. You'll work across multiple voltage levels working with clients including Transmission System Operators, Distribution Network Operators, and private developers worldwide. This includes working directly on National Grid's Great Grid Upgrade!

Here’s what you will do:

• Deliver full lifecycle cable engineering packages from feasibility studies and concept design through to detailed design, installation support, and commissioning.
• Review complex HV cable system designs, including route development, burial risk assessments, thermal, electromagnetic, and mechanical calculations.
• Undertake cable rating and system studies including ampacity, short circuit forces, thermal stability, and electromagnetic interference analysis.
• Carry out cable pulling, jointing, cleating, and installation feasibility studies.
• Collaborate with civil, structural, substation and OHL teams to ensure fully integrated solutions.
• Conduct third-party inspections and support FAT/SAT, installation, and commissioning activities.
• Support the interface activity with manufacturers, suppliers, and contractors to verify compliance with IEC, CIGRÉ, National Grid TPs, and other international standards.
• Participate in client meetings, technical workshops, HAZID/HAZOPs, and multidisciplinary coordination .

Here’s what we’re looking for:
