Job summary

AECOM is seeking a Principal Cable System Design Engineer to join its Transmission & Distribution team in the UK. This senior role drives technical excellence, leads large HV/EHV cable projects from concept to completion, and engages with clients across the UK and internationally.

You will develop routing, burial, thermal and mechanical models; validate calculations; coordinate across civil, OHL and substation disciplines; and mentor the team while supporting bids.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience as a technical leader in HV/EHV cable system design.
• Proven track record in design, specification and installation of complex cable systems.
• In-depth knowledge of National Grid TPs, IEC, and CIGRÉ standards.

Responsibilities

• Lead delivery of large HV/EHV cable projects from concept to completion, ensuring quality, safety and innovation.
• Develop and oversee HV cable system designs (routing, burial risk assessments, thermal, EMC, mechanical).
• Provide input into ratings, installation methods, jointing, cleating, and system integration.
• Guide and validate calculations (ampacity, short circuit, EMC, induced voltages, thermomechanical) to meet standards.
• Engage with clients and stakeholders; provide technical assurance and direction.
• Coordinate between civil, structural, OHL, substation and marine inputs for cohesive design.
• Drive project execution; manage risks, interfaces and quality reviews; support procurement and commissioning.
• Conduct 3rd-party inspections, FAT/SAT witnessing and vendor oversight.
• Mentor and develop the wider team in cable systems engineering.
• Support business development: proposals, bid reviews and client presentations.
