Job summary

Octagon Group in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, is seeking a Senior Software Engineer (C/C++) to join its R&D team. You will design, develop, and maintain complex backend software with end-to-end ownership, translating customer requirements into scalable, high-performance systems.

The role requires 5+ years in software development, strong C/C++ and Linux experience, and the ability to collaborate with product, sales and marketing. You will mentor junior engineers and contribute to product evolution.

Qualifications

• Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or similar.
• 5+ years of software development experience.
• Strong C/C++ programming and OO design skills.
• Experience in a Linux environment with GCC and GDB.
• Network programming and multithreading experience.
• Python programming knowledge.
• Proven ability to break down complex problems and deliver solutions.
• Experience mentoring or supporting other engineers.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain complex backend software solutions with full end-to-end ownership.
• Translate high-level requirements into scalable, maintainable system designs.
• Contribute to system architecture and ongoing product evolution.
• Develop high-quality, performant software to agreed timescales.
