Job summary

Casanovas Recruitment Solutions is seeking a Senior Business Rates Officer in Basildon, Essex. This temporary, five-month role leads a busy Business Rates team, overseeing billing, collection and recovery processes to ensure accuracy and compliance.

You will supervise and develop staff, coordinate workloads, liaise with ratepayers and legal teams, and support annual billing and government returns. A strong Revenues and Benefits background and IRRV qualification would be advantageous.

Senior Business Rates Officer (Temporary)

Location: Basildon, Essex

Pay Rate: £31.00 per hour (umbrella)

Contract: 5 months, temporary

Hours: Full-time

Working Pattern: Hybrid – 1 day per week in the office

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Business Rates Officer to coordinate a busy Business Rates team, overseeing billing, collection and recovery processes while ensuring accuracy, compliance and excellent service delivery.

This is an excellent opportunity for a knowledgeable Revenues professional with strong supervisory skills to support team performance, drive continuous improvement and maximise income collection.

Key Responsibilities

• Coordinate workloads and monitor team performance, carrying out quality checks and addressing any issues.
• Supervise, motivate and develop staff, providing coaching, guidance and performance management.
• Oversee Business Rates billing, collection, recovery, grants, exemptions, discounts and reliefs.
• Manage Business Improvement District (BID) levy collection processes.
• Ensure legislation, policies and enforcement procedures are applied correctly.
• Liaise with ratepayers, legal teams, courts, enforcement agents and other stakeholders to resolve complex cases.
• Support annual billing, government returns and the resolution of system or process issues.
• Monitor performance statistics, identify trends and implement improvements.
• Ensure appropriate handling of sensitive information and compliance with data protection requirements.

About You

You will have previous experience in a supervisory role within Revenues and Benefits, with strong technical knowledge of Business Rates and debt recovery.

You will also demonstrate:
