The Role: Senior Building Services Technician, Cavendish EstateThe Estates Division team based on the Cavendish Estate are looking for an enthusiastic person to join their team. The Cavendish Estate is predominantly based on the West Cambridge site and is where the Department of Physics operate from. The Cavendish Estate consists of multiple buildings, including the new Ray Dolby Centre.Your Responsibilities• This role will see you be responsible for maintenance and small project works on the Cavendish Estate.• You will be a vital part in the on-site maintenance/project team, ensuring the Cavendish Estate buildings are suitably maintained.• You will have the responsibility for looking after your own works packages, as well as co-ordinating with other members of your team.• In this role you will provide support for making sure visiting contractors are appropriately booked in and inducted.• As part of this role, you will carry out small project tasks and support with mechanical duties.• You will work collaboratively with the Department of Physics and other Estate Division employees.• Carry out reactive repairs, breakdown maintenance and planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on mechanical and associated building services plant and equipment.• Operate and monitor plant room equipment, ensuring systems are maintained safely, efficiently and in accordance with operational procedures.• Perform routine safety inspections and maintain accurate records of statutory checks, inspections and maintenance activities.• Diagnose faults and undertake first-line repairs to mechanical engineering plant and equipment, escalating specialist issues where required.• Conduct inspections of control panels, pumps, extract systems, air handling units (AHUs) and other building engineering infrastructure.• Prioritise maintenance activities and undertake technical investigations to identify root causes of building services issues.• Liaise with Estates Division services and external contractors to arrange servicing, repairs and remedial works as required.• Coordinate and administer Permit to Work systems, including issuing, monitoring and closing permits for controlled work areas.• Provide technical guidance and operational advice to building occupants and contractors regarding maintenance and engineering activities.• Support refurbishment and workplace improvement projects, including decorating, installation of shelving, benches, cupboards and other laboratory or office fittings.• Carry out minor alterations to associated building fabric and services tasks, where competent and authorised to do so.• Work collaboratively with the Building Services Manager and wider on-site Operations team to maintain a safe, compliant and customer-focused environment across the Cavendish Estate.About you:In order to succeed in this role, you will join us with benefits of working at the University of Cambridge include:• Competitive rates of pay with automatic service-related pay progression and annual cost of living increases;• Generous annual leave allowance• Flexible and hybrid working opportunities;• Generous maternity, adoption and shared parental leave entitlement and other family friendly schemes (e.g. workplace nurseries)• An auto-enrolment pension scheme, with a generous employer contribution;• Travel benefits and retail discounts at over 2,000 local and national stores;• Schemes to support with relocationInterviews will be held week commencing 12th October 2026Click the 'Apply' button below to register an account with our recruitment system (if you have not already) and apply online.If you have any questions about this vacancy or the application process, please email Estates Division on EDR@admin.cam.ac.ukPlease quote reference BA51092 on your application and in any correspondence about this vacancy.The University actively supports equality, diversity and inclusion and encourages applications from all sections of society.The University has a responsibility to ensure that all employees are eligible to live and work in the UK.
