Job summary

Maldon District Council, in partnership with Essex Shared Services, seeks a Principal Building Control Surveyor to lead complex duties from Maldon. You will supervise a skilled team, deliver expert advice, and manage high-stakes applications, with regular office presence and site visits as required.

We require RBI Class 2F, relevant degree, and senior Building Control experience. The role offers hybrid working with emphasis on service improvement and staff development.

Qualifications

• Educated to degree level in Building Surveying, Civil Engineering, or Construction Management or equivalent professional experience.
• Current registration with the Building Safety Regulator to undertake building control work in England, with RBI Class 2F.
• Chartered or allied membership of RICS, CIOB, or CABE is desirable.
• Evidence of CPD to maintain up-to-date knowledge of building control legislation and practice.
• Experience in managing complex building control applications, inspections, enforcement & appeals.

Responsibilities

• Support delivery of professional Building Control services, ensuring compliance with legislation and council policies.
• Manage complex building control applications, inspections, enforcement matters, and appeals as senior technical contact.
• Provide expert advice to the Council, senior officers, Members and external stakeholders.
• Oversee and mentor Building Control staff, promoting development and high performance.
• Contribute to policy development and process improvements to enhance service quality.
• Ensure accurate records and data management for enquiries and service requests.
• Monitor service performance and contribute to financial, strategic and operational planning.
• Act as a role model, fostering an inclusive, collaborative team culture.
