The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Senior Structures Engineer/Senior Bridge Engineer to join our Amey Consulting team in Newcastle, with shared office space, attending when necessary, and remaining days working remotely. We welcome applications from Senior Structural Engineers across this region.

Scotland is a significant area of growth at Amey. We manage both the Southwest and Northeast Trunk Road Network Management contracts, awarded in 2020 and 2022 respectively. These are 8-year contracts, extendable up to 12 years. Additionally, we have a diverse portfolio of major roads, bridges, and transportation and civil design projects with Transport Scotland, Local Authorities, and established contractors across the country.

These long-term contracts offer excellent opportunities for technical, engineering, and professional development at all career stages, involving some of the most exciting and challenging projects related to Scotland's arterial road network.

The role

As a Senior Structures Engineer/Senior Bridge Engineer, you will support your Design Team Leader on various Structures schemes, take the lead on projects, and mentor junior engineers and technicians. Responsibilities include:

• Leading a team, producing technically sound engineering solutions.
• Owning and leading projects from inception to completion, including quotation preparation and handover.
• Preparing and checking designs, calculations, drawings, and documentation to meet quality, cost, and schedule criteria.
• Overseeing junior staff tasks and ensuring accountability.
• Contributing to the professional development of junior staff and acting as a Delegated Engineer.
• Liaising with clients and suppliers, attending progress meetings, and responding to queries.
• Managing a small, locally based technical team and ensuring workload delivery.
• Assisting in bid preparation and work-winning activities.
• Promoting effective Health and Safety practices within the team.

What you will bring to us

• Experience and expertise in Structures, gained in an engineering role or equivalent.
• Ability to produce or oversee technically sound engineering solutions complying with standards and client requirements.
• Ownership in preparing and checking deliverables.
• Proficiency with relevant software (e.g., LUSAS, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design).
• Good commercial awareness.
• Understanding of CDM regulations and risk assessments.
• Experience in hazard and risk management and mitigation.
• Understanding of interface management and ensuring alignment across disciplines.
• Incorporated or Chartered status with ICE or IStructE, or equivalent professional license, desirable and may be essential for certain contracts.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent further learning.
