Job summary

Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust is seeking a part-time Senior Biomedical Scientist to join the Transfusion team and support our Pathology Service. The role requires HCPC registration, a MSc in Biomedical Science, and extensive transfusion experience.

You will work 30 hours per week with a Band 7 salary (£49,387 - £56,515 pro-rata). The contract is permanent and the closing date is 18 November 2026.

Qualifications

• HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with MSc or equivalent in Biomedical Science.
• Minimum of 3 years post-registration laboratory experience in a clinical lab.
• Evidence of continuing professional development and transfusion expertise.

Responsibilities

• Carry out Haematology and Blood Transfusion investigations to aid diagnosis and monitor treatment.
• Provide reliable analytical data in line with ISO 15189 and MHRA standards.
• Work as part of a Biomedical Scientists team to deliver a patient-focused service within budget.
• Supervise, train and guide laboratory staff; provide specialist test advice to clinicians.
• Contribute to departmental quality standards and service improvements.
• Possess specialist transfusion knowledge demonstrated by MSc IBMS Portfolio or equivalent.
• Deputise for Operational Manager and work within agreed department patterns.

We have a fantastic opportunity for a part-time Senior Biomedical Scientist to join our Transfusion team and support our Pathology Service.

Main duties of the job

Candidates must be HCPC Registered, with a minimum of 3 years post-registration laboratory experience within a clinical laboratory and hold an MSc or equivalent in Biomedical Science. Candidates should be highly experienced in all aspects of routine Blood Transfusion.

Job responsibilities

The role of the Specialist Biomedical Scientist is to carry out Haematology and Blood Transfusion investigations on samples of blood and body fluids to aid in the diagnosis of disease and monitor the treatment of patients by:

• Assisting in the provision of reliable and accurate analytical data for the Trust, in accordance with relevant regulatory standards and requirements (including ISO 15189, and MHRA).
• To work as part of a team of Biomedical Scientists to deliver, within budget, a patient-orientated medical laboratory service to contribute to efficient and effective care.
• To demonstrate an exemplary standard of work at all times; including the supervision, training and guidance of laboratory staff as required.
• To provide specialist advice to clinicians as to the appropriateness of tests and timescale.
• To assist in the ongoing achievement of departmental quality standards.
• To have attained specialist knowledge in Transfusion through a minimum of three years experience as a HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist working in a Transfusion laboratory demonstrated by the possession of an IBMS approved Masters level qualification or equivalent.
• To participate in the agreed working patterns of the department to provide a safe and effective service.
• To deputise for Operational Manager as required

We are looking for an experienced Biomedical Scientist ideally with experience of Biorad IH500, WinPath Enterprise and Blood 360 and evidence of extensive Transfusion practice.
