Macatia and Coffee, a thriving and popular specialist coffee shop in Herne Hill, is seeking an experienced and passionate Senior Barista / Supervisor. This role is pivotal in maintaining our high standards of drinks and food. This means you will be creating and updating drink recipes, maintaining quality control within the team, and leading our team of baristas.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Quality Control and Standards: Ensure all drinks and food meet our quality standards and are consistently prepared to perfection. Conduct regular quality checks on all drinks products. Maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene in the coffee/kitchen bar area.

  2. Training and Development: Train new baristas on coffee and alternative drink preparation techniques, customer service, and equipment maintenance. Conduct skills assessments and training sessions to ensure all baristas are up-to-date with the latest coffee trends and techniques. Help develop and maintain training materials and manuals.

  3. Operational Management: Assist in the daily operations of the coffee/kitchen bar, ensuring efficient and smooth service. Report daily inventory requirements to the Location Manager and order stock as needed. Monitor equipment performance and report maintenance and repair needs to the Location Manager. Order stock as and when required to ensure a continuity of supply to our customers.

  4. Innovation and Product Development: Collaborate with the Operations Director and Location Manager to update and introduce new drinks recipes. Stay informed about industry trends and implement new ideas to keep our drinks offerings fresh and exciting. Experiment with different brewing methods, styles and presentations.

  5. Team Leadership: Lead by example, demonstrating exceptional barista skills and customer service. Foster a positive and collaborative team environment. Working with (and deputising) the Location Manager to address any performance issues, providing constructive feedback to team members. You will lead the shift, delegating necessary daily tasks to staff, as well as observe/support the member(s) of staff you are on shift with.

Qualifications:

Advanced coffee-making standard (3+years Barista experience or equivalent) advanced level of milk steaming, dialling-in espresso, cupping/recipe making, knowledge of batch-brewing, pour-over filter coffee and cold brew. Knowledge of industry trends, such as matcha drinks, seasonal drinks and non-coffee drinks (iced tea, chai, hot chocolate etc.)

Experience (1+years) as a Senior Barista / Supervisor with team leading responsibilities. Strong leadership and team management skills.

Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities. Passion for coffee and a keen eye for detail. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
