Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic surgeon to join our innovative, friendly team as an RCS Senior Clinical Fellow in Bariatric Surgery. The successful applicant will participate in the General Surgery on-call rota and work as part of the bariatric team caring for bariatric, benign UGI, and emergency general surgical patients.
This post offers an ST7+ equivalent surgical trainee the chance to gain experience in a large bariatric centre, developing competence in performing bariatric procedures independently, managing patients through outpatient settings, and handling bariatric emergencies.
STFT is the lead Trust in the Wear base unit for the clinical curriculum as part of Newcastle University’s Regional Medical School. The Trust supports undergraduate teaching with a £4 million Education and Training Centre. The Directorate has strong academic links with Newcastle and Sunderland Universities, with honorary and visiting professorships, and a dedicated teaching fellow.
Previous post holders have gained significant exposure to upper GI and Bariatric surgery, contributed to publications, and presented at national and international meetings, enhancing their career prospects.
This is a 12-month fixed-term post (1st November 2025 - 31st October 2026).
The renowned Bariatric Unit offers a full range of benign UGI surgeries, performed laparoscopically and robotically, supported by a multidisciplinary team. Procedures include Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, One Anastomosis Gastric Bypass, Sleeve Gastrectomy, Gastric Banding, Gastric Balloons, and Revisional Bariatric Surgery, along with gallstone surgery, bile duct exploration, anti-reflux surgery, and hernia repairs.
Applicants must hold GMC registration and FRCS or equivalent. Evidence of professional development, laparoscopic experience, audit, and independent surgical practice is essential. Experience in training course leadership and presenting at meetings is desirable.
