Job summary

OCU is seeking a Senior Authorised Person to lead high-voltage switching operations and provide technical leadership across critical power infrastructure projects in the UK. The role focuses on safety, operational excellence, and project delivery within live network environments.

You will mentor Authorised Persons and operational teams, driving best practice and ensuring compliance with relevant regulations. The position is permanent, full-time, site-based with regular travel across projects.

Qualifications

• Senior Authorised Person status (current or previous) within utility, DNO, ICP, IDNO or transmission environment.
• Extensive experience operating and maintaining high-voltage electrical systems.
• Strong knowledge of electrical safety regulations and switching procedures.

The Opportunity

OCU is delivering some of the UK's most critical power infrastructure projects, supporting the growth, resilience, and transition of the electricity network. As a Senior Authorised Person, you’ll play a pivotal role in ensuring the safe operation of high-voltage electrical systems, providing technical leadership across complex projects and live network environments.

What You’ll Do

• Lead and execute high-voltage switching operations in accordance with safety rules and operational procedures.
• Plan and coordinate network access, outages, and switching programmes to support project delivery.
• Authorise and oversee work on high-voltage electrical systems, ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations and standards.
• Provide technical guidance and support to operational, engineering, and project delivery teams.
• Identify, investigate, and resolve electrical faults, defects, and network issues.
• Review and approve safety documentation, permits, and operational procedures before works commence.
• Champion a strong safety culture through coaching, auditing, and promoting best practice across project teams.
• Support the development and mentoring of Authorised Persons and operational personnel.

Essential

What You’ll Bring

• Current or previously held Senior Authorised Person status within a utility, DNO, ICP, IDNO, or transmission environment.
• Extensive experience operating and maintaining high-voltage electrical systems.
• Strong knowledge of electrical safety regulations, switching procedures, and industry best practice.
• Experience planning and executing switching operations involving substations, switchgear, transformers, and associated HV equipment.
• Strong technical fault-finding and problem-solving capabilities.
• Relevant electrical engineering qualification or equivalent industry experience.
• HV Authorised Person, HV Switching, or equivalent industry authorisations.
• Full UK driving licence.

Desirable

• Experience working on transmission, distribution, or major energy infrastructure projects.
• Bonus if you have experience supporting commissioning, energisation, and network integration activities.
• It would be great if you’ve worked across multiple network operators and safety rule frameworks.
• It would be great if you have experience mentoring Authorised Persons and operational teams.
• Knowledge of National Grid, DNO, or ICP operational procedures would be advantageous.
