As an Associate or Senior Associate in our Casualty team at Markel Law, you’ll manage a diverse and varied caseload, providing defendant work to insurers on a wide variety of disputes, including those relating to employers liability and public liability within the social care, equine and construction sectors. You’ll support the Head of Department in supervising junior team members and achieving departmental goals.

The role involves working on a mixed case load of fast track, intermediate and multi-track work primarily on cases funded under legal expenses insurance policies.

Who we are:

Markel Law LLP is a law firm, independently authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. We handle a broad range of legal services for Markel policyholders, associations and leading businesses across a range of sectors. Our teams are spread across offices in Manchester, Leeds, London and Croydon, employing over 60 lawyers. We are recognised as leading experts across commercial, civil, personal injury, employment and regulatory law often handling complex, high value claims and disputes with a unique focus on commerciality and client outcomes rather than profit.

At Markel we hold the individual's right to self-determination in the highest light, providing an atmosphere in which people can reach their personal potential. The Markel approach is one of spontaneity and flexibility. We have the ability to make decisions or change course quickly unlike other large law firms. Our goal is to deliver legal services in line with the Markel Style.

Part of Markel Group (NYSE – MKL), a Fortune 500 company with over 60 offices in 20+ countries, is a holding company for insurance, reinsurance, specialist advisory, and investment operations around the world.

What you’ll be doing:

Your day-to-day activities will involve managing a diverse caseload of disputes, including those relating to employers liability and public liability within the social welfare, equine and construction sectors. You’ll have a mixed case load of fast track, intermediate and multi-track work.

The role will involve providing our clients with an efficient and courteous service at all times while delivering on billing and other key performance indicators. In addition to this, we would look to you to act as a mentor and supervise junior solicitors and paralegals, helping them achieve their targets and develop their skills.

The role will also allow you the opportunity to develop your understanding of the insurance industry, by undertaking additional qualifications, and the contribution an insurance panel law firm can make to the success of a large insurance company.

Experience:

  • 5-10 years of post-qualification experience (PQE) in Casualty / PI
  • Have existing defendant personal injury litigation experience in both EL/PL and professional liability claims involving personal injury
  • Experience in clinical negligence, Animals Act 1971 and policy coverage would be ideal, although not essential
  • Have a thorough understanding of the Civil Procedure Rules
  • Be accustomed to running your own caseload under appropriate supervision

Skills:

  • Demonstrate strong communication and organisational skills with an ability to prioritise workload
  • Have good IT skills, certainly with experience in using Microsoft Office 2010 and case management systems (preferably Partner for Windows)
  • Be able to work under pressure
  • Deliver against tight deadlines and display key time management skills when prioritising tasks to ensure compliance with deadlines.

  • Demonstrate first-class client care and communication skills across all levels
  • Demonstrate an ability to develop relationships with key internal and external partners
  • Have excellent written communication skills
  • Be an effective team mate, demonstrating a positive ‘can do’ attitude and displaying co-operative interaction with team members
  • Be willing to prepare internal and external training materials and present to colleagues and clients
