Job description

Introducing an exciting opportunity to join the Architecture Team as a Senior Architectural Façade Engineer/Designer.

Job Summary

As a Senior Architectural Façade Engineer/Designer, you will be specialising in the application of building science and technology to architectural and construction projects.

A facade engineer/designer focuses on the aesthetic and functional aspects of building facades. They are responsible for designing and implementing the exterior facades of buildings, ensuring the facade is water & airtight, aesthetically pleasing, energy-efficient, and structurally sound. The facade is not only the face of the building but also a critical element in its performance, affecting thermal insulation, acoustics, and weather resistance.

You are recognised as having specialist skills enabling you to manage the design process and use your technical knowledge and expertise to provide innovative solutions. In addition, you will have experience in negotiating and managing the development of a construction project.

You will be negotiating and managing all aspects of architectural and construction contracts, whether it is using traditional, partnering, design & build or other methods. You will also recognise the significance of the post-construction aspects of a project.

Experience Requirements

  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience or comparable work experience within the building/construction environment both off and on site.
  • A detailed understanding and thorough business knowledge of the Building Façade Engineering & Architectural field.
  • Experience in relevant software in a recognised Industry Standard Format.
  • An appreciation of architecture.
  • Excellent understanding of facade systems.
  • An innate understanding of structural engineering and façade physics.
  • All round technical knowledge including: structural analysis, thermal analysis, facade systems, facade materials, facade performances, specification, testing, manufacture and site.
  • Very good understanding of engineering principles.
  • Competent with computer analysis of structures and design of structural elements in steel, stainless steel, aluminium, timber and glass.
  • Understanding of complex construction procedures.
  • Conversant in designing to British Standards/Eurocodes.
  • Working knowledge of SCIA and Tekla Building Designer.
  • Able to deliver projects to a minimum of BIM Level 2 standard.
  • An established skill of maintaining excellent client relationships, being competent in key client management as a tool towards developing future business.
  • Suitable technical based qualifications, or equivalent by experience.
  • Working towards or have obtained an Architectural Engineering degree or HND/HNC in civil or structural engineering or similar.
  • Working towards or have obtained a Masters in Facade Engineering (desirable).
  • Working towards or registered with ICE or IStructE or similar.
  • Member of the Society of Facade Engineers (MSFE).
  • Associate Member of the Chartered Institute Of Building (ACIOB).
  • A positive working attitude with good communication skills and flexibility in a dynamic role within an established Architectural team.
  • Experience in delegating, supervising and mentoring junior team members.
  • Experience of briefing CAD/REVIT technicians.
  • Commercial awareness and a flexible attitude to both the type of work undertaken and the level of responsibility accepted.

Fully proficient and competent in:

  • Unitised Facades.
  • Curtain wall facades and atria.
  • All glass (planar) facades.
  • Door and window systems, including Schuco, Kawneer etc.
  • Twin wall facades (including closed cavity).
  • Fire rated facades.
  • Steel system and associated glazing styles (Raico etc).

Specialist System/Technical Knowledge:

  • All types of Curtain walling and cladding, including:
  • Unitised facade system, Twin wall facade system, Planar facade system, Cable truss facade system, Stick facade system, Specialist systems including Schuco, Technal, SAPA and Pilkington, Patent Glazing, Fire screens etc Acoustic and Thermal enhancement, CFD and OTTV, as well as Sub-contract activities including Colt, Sarnafil, Smoke vents, Louvres, Cladding, Revolving doors, Sliding doors, BMU’s.
