Job Description:

Summary

Yelp's engineering culture is driven by our collaborative approach: we value individual authenticity and encourage creative solutions. All new engineers deploy working code within their first week, and we support their growth with mentorship and teamwork. Our focus is on helping users, growing as engineers, and fostering a fun, collaborative environment.

Are you interested in accessing and managing large-scale business data, such as safety measures, hours, or unique insights? Imagine working with millions of data points to connect consumers with businesses. If this excites you, consider joining us!

The Semantic Business Information (SBI) team at Yelp seeks a Backend Engineer to develop and maintain our platform that collects, curates, and provides up-to-date business information. This role involves supporting the backbone of Yelp's content, enabling richer user experiences. We welcome applicants based in the United Kingdom, even if you don't meet every requirement.

What you'll do:

  • Build, extend, and support backend platforms for trusted business data collection.
  • Collaborate with teams like Search, Local Services, and Ads to develop APIs and streaming solutions for data access.
  • Work with database teams to select appropriate storage solutions for scale.
  • Create tools and services to monitor data quality.
  • Make informed build-or-buy decisions aligned with business goals.

What it takes to succeed:

  • Proficiency in object-oriented languages (e.g., Python, Java), SQL/NoSQL, Unix, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with large-scale distributed systems supporting consumer applications.
  • Strong API development skills (REST, GraphQL).
  • Ability to use performance analysis tools effectively.
  • Multiple years of full-time experience.
  • Curiosity and persistence in solving new problems.

What you'll get:

  • Ownership of projects from day one, within a collaborative and dynamic environment.
  • Competitive salary, pension, and stock options.
  • 25 days paid holiday, increasing with service, plus a floating holiday.
  • Monthly reimbursement for remote work expenses (£150).
  • Dependent care support (£81/month).
  • Private health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Flexible hours and meeting-free Wednesdays.
  • Regular hackathons, learning groups, and career development support.
  • Opportunities for conferences and digital events.
  • Wellness expense allowance (£81/month).
  • Quarterly team offsites.
