Job summary

The Guardian is seeking a Senior Android Developer to join the Apps Experience team. You will build and enhance the Guardian Android app using Kotlin (and some Java), lead on projects, and collaborate across engineering, design, editorial and commercial teams.

You’ll contribute to a culture of testing, pair programming, and continuous learning, while shaping product and technical decisions with your leadership experience. This hybrid role offers flexibility in office days and remote work.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated expertise in Android development and strong interest in growing skills.
• Strong competence in modern Android development tools (Jetpack Compose, Coroutines/Flow, MVVM, Webviews, Jetpack libraries).
• Experience with JVM unit testing, instrumented testing and UI regression testing.
• Comfort with both cutting-edge tech and legacy code.
• Willingness to take on leadership roles in team projects.
• Familiarity with iOS concepts (Swift/Objective-C) or backend tech (Scala/Typescript) is useful.

Responsibilities

• Build and test major features, maintain existing functionality for the Guardian Android app.
• Work 90%+ in Kotlin, with some Java as needed.
• Collaborate with iOS, server-side, web engineers, designers, product managers and editorial teams.
• Lead on select projects and help teammates grow by sharing knowledge.
• Contribute to product decisions as well as technical ones.
• Participate in daily hack days and drive innovation.
