Job description
Overview

Senior Android Engineer (Kotlin) - Build Tech That Really Matters
Bristol - (2-3 days per week on site) £55,000 - £75,000

We are supporting one of our long-term clients in Bristol who are a growing engineering scale-up doing serious work within defence, government, and emergency services. Their tech supports soldiers, firefighters, and first responders, helping them make critical, life-saving decisions in high-pressure environments.

They are a smaller, agile team who have been consistently winning large projects ahead of larger contracting consultancies by being smarter, faster, and obsessed with building solutions that actually work in the real world. This isn’t your typical Android job.

We’re looking for an experienced Android/Kotlin Engineer with a passion for building hardware-connected Android systems – not just standard banking or retail apps. If you have worked on/with any of the following we would love to hear from you:

  • Devices with RF integration
  • Industrial scanners
  • Bluetooth-connected hardware like heart rate monitors
  • Custom embedded Android platforms (Android TV, etc.)

You'll bring deep technical expertise to the team, mentor other engineers, and help drive best practices while solving complex technical challenges.

What We're Looking For
  • Strong Kotlin skills.
  • Experience with embedded Linux development.
  • Android development beyond phones and consumer apps, ideally integrated with physical hardware.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001/27001 standards (or similar regulated environments).
  • Collaborative mindset and empathy for end users — usability and accessibility.
  • Agile, iterative approach to building great products.

Bonus points if you've worked in defence or another highly regulated space — but it's not essential.

The Essentials
  • Must be eligible for SC clearance — UK passport holders preferred.
  • 2-3 days per week on site in Bristol due to secure hardware projects.
Why You'll Love It
  • Build tech with a genuine purpose that makes a difference.
  • Work with a talented, supportive team who care about what they do.
  • Be part of a company with big growth plans, where your voice matters.
