Job summary

ALS Laboratories (UK) Ltd in Wakefield is seeking an experienced Senior Analyst (Grade 1) to join our Microbiology department. You will supervise analysts, ensure samples meet required quantities and quality standards, and provide day‑to‑day technical support to maintain smooth workflow.

The role requires an A Level in Science, strong analytical skills and experience in environmental testing. Working hours are 37 per week with rotating shifts (Tue–Sat, 8am–4pm or 2pm–10pm); 6‑month secondment

Qualifications

  • Minimum of an A Level in Science or equivalent qualification.
  • Significant laboratory experience with in-depth knowledge of environmental testing.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent organisational abilities with the capacity to prioritise your own work.
  • High attention to detail and the ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Clear and effective communication skills.
  • Good IT proficiency.
  • A comprehensive understanding of Quality Management Systems.
  • The ability to critically evaluate and draw sound conclusions from scientific data.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general laboratory work in line with documented methodologies and procedures.
  • Ensure all samples meet required quantities, quality standards and deadlines.
  • Maintain high standards of quality control and uphold QMS processes.
  • Supervise and support analysts in the absence of the Team Leader.
  • Train team members to the required standard and assess competency.
  • Manage resources to meet service delivery targets and KPIs.
  • Investigate non-conforming work and contribute to process improvements.
  • Respond to customer queries and complaints professionally and promptly.
  • Uphold Health & Safety standards and promote a safe working environment.

The Role

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Senior Analyst (Grade 1) to join our Microbiology department in Wakefield. This is a key position within our analytical operations, ensuring that all samples are processed to the required standards, quantities and deadlines, in line with our Quality Management System (QMS). Acting as a role model for excellence, you’ll provide day-to-day supervision and technical support to analysts, ensuring smooth workflow and maintaining the highest standards of quality, safety, and service delivery.   • Hours Per Week: Full time, permanent 37 hours per week
  • Rotating shifts: Tuesday - Saturday (Rotating Shift - 8am-4pm and 2pm-10pm)
  • Contract Type: Full Time 6-month Secondment

The Day to Day:
  • Perform general laboratory work in strict accordance with documented methodologies and procedures.

  • Supervise and support analysts in the absence of the Team Leader, providing guidance and day-to-day oversight.
  • Train team members to the required standard and assess ongoing competency.
  • Manage resources effectively to meet service delivery targets and company KPIs.
  • Investigate non-conforming work and contribute to process improvement initiatives.
  • Respond to customer queries and complaints professionally and promptly.
  • Proactively uphold Health & Safety standards, reporting any incidents or near-misses and promoting a safe working environment.
